Pediatric Nurse Extern - Inpatient Rehab

Join Valley Children's Healthcare as a Pediatric Nurse Extern in our Inpatient Rehabilitation unit, one of only two California pediatric CARF-accredited facilities. This position offers hands-on nursing experience in a specialized long-term rehabilitation setting serving children with traumatic brain injuries, multiple traumas, tracheostomy/ventilator patients, spinal cord injuries, stroke, orthopedic conditions, Guillain-Barré syndrome, and other neurologic disorders.

As a Pediatric Nurse Extern, you will perform nursing activities documented in your nursing program curriculum and may assist with medication administration upon completion of pediatric theory and clinical coursework and successful completion of Valley Children's medication examination.

Clinical Setting

Our Pediatric Inpatient Rehabilitation unit specializes in long-term rehabilitation care with an interdisciplinary team approach. The facility features a large playroom with entertainment options and extensive toy collection, plus a spacious kitchen area with full cooking equipment for families during extended stays. Valley Children's Rehab patients demonstrate some of the best rehabilitation outcomes in the country, particularly in achieving greater independence.

Required Qualifications

• High School Diploma or G.E.D.
• Current enrollment with completion of at least two semesters (or equivalent) in an accredited RN program
• Proof of second semester completion via official transcripts
• Continuous enrollment throughout employment in an approved Work Study course at an affiliated institution: Fresno City College, CSU Fresno, Lemoore College, College of the Sequoias, SJVC, Merced College, or CSU Stanislaus
• BLS - Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association, required within 30 days of hire or transfer into position

Advancement Opportunities

Advancement to Pediatric Nurse Extern II is based on completion of pediatric theory and clinical coursework and successful completion of Valley Children's Hospital medication examination.

Schedule and Orientation

• Position type: Per Diem
• Daily hours: 8 hours
• Varied shifts
• Must be able to complete the full, week-long new hire and clinical orientation, typically offered during school breaks in December or January

Compensation

• Compensation range: $23.00 - $36.00 per hour
• Final compensation dependent upon skills and experience
