The opportunity

Job Description

Join Valley Children's Healthcare as a Pediatric Nurse Extern on the Inpatient Oncology Unit (Craycroft), a 35-bed specialized unit dedicated to caring for children with oncology, hematology, rheumatology, renal, diabetic, and endocrine disorders. This extern position offers hands-on clinical experience in a uniquely designed environment featuring private rooms with high-efficiency filter systems to protect immunocompromised patients, along with accommodations for overnight family stays.

As a Pediatric Nurse Extern, you will perform nursing activities documented in your nursing program curriculum. Upon completion of pediatric theory and clinical coursework and successful completion of Valley Children's medication examination, you may assist with medication administration. You will work alongside a dedicated healthcare team committed to providing comprehensive, supportive, and compassionate care to guide patients and families through their medical journey.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Current enrollment with completion of at least two semesters (or equivalent) in an accredited RN Program
  • Proof of second semester completion via official transcripts
  • Continuous enrollment throughout employment in an approved Work Study course at an affiliated institution: Fresno City College, CSU Fresno, Lemoore College, College of the Sequoias, SJVC, Merced College, or CSU Stanislaus
  • BLS - Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association, required within 30 days of hire or transfer into position
  • Expected graduation date of December 2027

Advancement Opportunities

  • Advancement to PNE II is based on completion of pediatric theory and clinical coursework and successful completion of Valley Children's Hospital medication examination.

Schedule and Orientation

  • Position requires completion of a full, weeklong new hire and clinical orientation
  • Orientations are typically offered during school breaks in December or January
  • Daily hours: 8 hours
  • Varied shifts
  • Per Diem position type

Compensation

  • $23.00 - $36.00 per hour
  • Final compensation is dependent upon skills and experience
