Job Description

Join the Pediatric Inpatient Oncology Unit (Craycroft) as a Nurse Extern and gain clinical experience in a specialized 35-bed unit dedicated to pediatric oncology, hematology, rheumatology, renal, diabetic, and endocrine disorders. This extern position offers hands-on nursing experience in a uniquely designed clinical environment that prioritizes patient safety and family support.

Clinical Setting

Craycroft is a specialized pediatric inpatient unit featuring private rooms equipped with high-efficiency filter systems to protect patients with weakened immune systems. The unit accommodates overnight family stays and is designed to meet the needs of patients requiring isolation or those with mobility challenges.

Position Overview

As a Pediatric Nurse Extern, you will perform nursing activities documented in your nursing program curriculum. Upon completion of pediatric theory and clinical coursework and successful completion of Valley Children's medication examination, you may assist with medication administration. You must complete the full weeklong new hire and clinical orientation, which is typically offered during school breaks in December or January.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Current enrollment with completion of at least two semesters (or equivalent) in an accredited RN program
  • Proof of second semester completion via official transcripts
  • Continuous enrollment throughout employment in an approved Work Study course at an affiliated institution: Fresno City College, CSU Fresno, Lemoore College, College of the Sequoias, SJVC, Merced College, or CSU Stanislaus
  • Expected graduation date of December 2027
  • BLS (Basic Life Support) certification from the American Heart Association, required within 30 days of hire or transfer into position

Advancement

Advancement to PNE II is based on completion of pediatric theory and clinical coursework and successful completion of Valley Children's Hospital medication examination.

  • Varied shifts
  • 8-hour daily shifts
  • Orientations typically offered during school breaks in December or January

Compensation

$23.00 - $36.00 per hour. Final compensation is dependent upon skills and experience.
