Pediatric Nurse Extern - Inpatient General Medical Unit

Join Valley Children's Healthcare as a Pediatric Nurse Extern on the Discovery unit, an acute care inpatient general medical unit dedicated to exceptional care for pediatric patients with various medical conditions. This position offers hands-on clinical experience in a specialized pediatric setting while you complete your RN program.

Clinical Setting

Discovery specializes in diagnosing and treating acute medical conditions including sepsis, hyperbilirubinemia, seizures, rash or fever of unknown origin, generalized muscle weakness, cellulitis, abscess, ingestion, gastroenteritis, irritable bowel syndrome, short gut syndrome, and hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). During winter months, the unit focuses on respiratory patients, providing expert care for respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and pneumonia.

Responsibilities

• Perform nursing activities documented as learned in your nursing program
• Assist with medication administration upon completion of pediatric theory and clinical coursework and successful completion of the Valley Children's medication examination
• Participate in patient and family education starting at admission and continuing through discharge, covering topics such as understanding diagnoses, proper medication administration, NJ feeds, GT care and feeding, PPN and IL administration through central lines, and central line care
• Work collaboratively with interdisciplinary professionals to deliver comprehensive and effective patient care

Required Qualifications

• High School Diploma or G.E.D.
• Current enrollment with completion of at least two semesters or equivalent in an accredited RN program
• Proof of second semester completion via official transcripts
• Continuous enrollment throughout employment in an approved Work Study course at an affiliated institution (Fresno City College, CSU Fresno, Lemoore College, College of the Sequoias, SJVC, Merced College, or CSU Stanislaus)
• BLS - Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association, required within 30 days of hire or transfer into position

Advancement

Advancement to Pediatric Nurse Extern II is based on completion of pediatric theory and clinical coursework and successful completion of the Valley Children's Hospital medication examination.

Schedule and Hours

• Position type: Per Diem
• Daily hours: 8
• Shift: Varied
• Full weeklong new hire and clinical orientation is required. Orientations are typically offered during school breaks in December or January.

Compensation

• Pediatric Nurse Extern I: $23.00 per hour
• Pediatric Nurse Extern II: $23.43 per hour
• Compensation range: $23.00 - $36.00
• Final compensation is dependent upon skills and experience.
