The opportunity

Job Description

Valley Children's Healthcare is seeking a Pediatric Nurse Extern to join our Float Pool at our 358-bed stand-alone children's hospital in Madera, California. As a Pediatric Nurse Extern, you will perform nursing activities documented in your nursing program curriculum and may assist with medication administration upon completion of pediatric theory and clinical coursework and successful completion of Valley Children's medication examination.

Clinical Setting

You will work in a comprehensive pediatric medical center serving children across Central California with advanced specialty services including cancer and blood disorders, heart care, neonatal intensive care, and care for children with routine to rare and complex conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Perform nursing activities as documented in your nursing program
  • Assist with medication administration upon meeting specific requirements
  • Participate in float pool assignments across various pediatric units

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or G.E.D.
  • Current enrollment with completion of at least two semesters (or equivalent) in an accredited RN program
  • Proof of second semester completion via official transcripts
  • Continuous enrollment throughout employment in an approved Work Study course at an affiliated institution: Fresno City College, CSU Fresno, Lemoone College, College of the Sequoias, SJVC, Merced College, or CSU Stanislaus
  • BLS - Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association, required within 30 days of hire or transfer into position

Advancement

Advancement to PNE II is based on completion of pediatric theory and clinical coursework and successful completion of Valley Children's Hospital medication examination.

Schedule and Orientation

  • Position type: Per Diem
  • Daily hours: 8
  • Varied shifts
  • Must be able to complete a full week-long new hire and clinical orientation
  • Orientations are typically offered during school breaks in December and January

Compensation

  • $23.00 - $36.00 per hour
  • Final compensation is dependent upon skills and experience
