Pediatric Nurse Extern - Emergency Department

Join Valley Children's Pediatric Emergency Department as a Pediatric Nurse Extern, supporting care for approximately 90,000 pediatric patients annually in a licensed 38-bed unit designated as a Level II Pediatric Trauma Center. This is a per diem position offering hands-on clinical experience in a fast-paced emergency environment.

Clinical Setting

Valley Children's Pediatric ED is a specialized trauma center receiving critically injured patients directly from the scene. The department operates with a multidisciplinary team providing evidence-based, patient and family-centered care in a collaborative environment that emphasizes teamwork, clear communication, and safe, timely, efficient care.

Responsibilities

• Perform nursing activities documented as learned in your nursing program
• Assist with medication administration upon completion of pediatric theory and clinical coursework and successful completion of the Valley Children's medication examination
• Participate in a fast-paced team environment requiring clear communication and collaboration
• Engage in clinical learning and skill development under supervision

Professional Development

The ED offers advancement and professional growth opportunities including Mobile Intensive Care Nurse roles supporting pre-hospital personnel, triage training for patient assessment and urgency determination, and involvement in committee work, special projects, and task forces beyond bedside care.

Required Qualifications

• High School Diploma or G.E.D.
• Current enrollment with completion of at least two semesters (or equivalent) in an accredited RN program
• Proof of second semester completion via official transcripts
• Continuous enrollment throughout employment in an approved Work Study course at an affiliated institution: Fresno City College, CSU Fresno, Lemoore College, College of the Sequoias, SJVC, Merced College, or CSU Stanislaus
• BLS - Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association, required within 30 days of hire or transfer into position

Advancement

Progression to Pediatric Nurse Extern II is based on completion of pediatric theory and clinical coursework and successful completion of the Valley Children's Hospital medication examination.

Schedule and Orientation

• Per diem position with varied shifts
• 8-hour daily shifts
• Must be able to complete the full, week-long new hire and clinical orientation
• Orientations are typically offered during school breaks in December or January

Compensation

$23.00 - $36.00 per hour. Final compensation is dependent upon skills and experience.
