The opportunity

Job Description

Tufts Medicine is seeking a Patient Care Technician to provide direct patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. This role focuses on delivering professional nursing support services in accordance with physician orders, including basic patient care, vital signs monitoring, specimen collection, and assistance with clinical procedures. You will work as part of the healthcare team to support patient flow on the unit while maintaining high standards of patient safety and infection control.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care including personal hygiene, elimination, catheter care, vital signs monitoring, skin care, and mobility assistance
  • Document care provided and patient responses according to established procedures
  • Assist patients with nutritional support and feedings as needed; document intake and output and weight as required
  • Perform 12-lead EKGs, document patient information on EKG sheets, and deliver results promptly to the appropriate nurse or physician
  • Obtain, document, process, and accurately label all specimens according to policy; transport specimens in a timely manner
  • Set up equipment for and assist physicians and clinicians with treatments, dressings, tests, and other procedures as assigned
  • Perform selected therapeutic procedures as outlined in competency and skills checklists
  • Complete annual point-of-care testing in a timely manner
  • Participate in purposeful hourly rounding of patients in accordance with standards of excellence
  • Observe and communicate the general physical and emotional status of patients; keep the RN informed of care delivered and patient responses; report any changes in patient condition to the RN promptly
  • Verify patient identification by checking wristband and date of birth prior to providing any care, test, or treatment; notify the RN if a wristband is missing
  • Answer patient call lights in a timely and courteous manner using AIDET communication (Acknowledge, Introduce, Duration, Explanation, Thank You)
  • Reinforce belongings policy with patients and families; document appropriately and secure belongings according to procedure
  • Perform unit secretary duties as assigned
  • Cooperate with members of the healthcare team to achieve departmental objectives and maintain good employee, interdepartmental, and public relations
  • Adhere to precaution measures for the safety of patients, visitors, and hospital personnel; maintain basic principles of infection control
  • Demonstrate appropriate actions and understanding of your role in all codes and disaster situations
  • Assist in administering post-mortem care
  • Remain responsible for information shared at all staff meetings
  • Function in the role of patient observer following all assigned roles and responsibilities

Required Qualifications

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • Four years of healthcare experience and nursing service experience
  • Certified Patient Care Technician, Clinical Associate, Certified Nursing Assistant, or equivalent certification

Physical Requirements

  • Lifting up to 30-35 lbs and turning patients
  • Prolonged standing and walking
  • Occasional twisting, bending, reaching, pushing/pulling, sitting, kneeling, and squatting
  • Manual dexterity using fine hand manipulation for performing procedures and operating a computer keyboard
  • Ability to see computer screens and reports

Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend medical terminology
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational skills
  • Ability to work with detailed, confidential material
  • Computer experience
  • Knowledge of asepsis technique and ability to utilize sterile technique when indicated
  • Knowledge and skill in performing all point-of-care testing done on the unit
  • Knowledge and skill in providing age-appropriate care to the population served

Compensation

  • Base pay range: $19.77 - $24.57 per hour (based on full-time equivalent)
  • Individual offers are determined using a comprehensive approach that considers relevant experience, certifications, education, skills, and internal equity
