Patient Care Technician/Senior Nursing Attendant - Medicine Telemetry, Part-time, Nights

NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island is seeking a Patient Care Technician/Senior Nursing Attendant for our Medicine Telemetry unit. This is a part-time, night shift position supporting direct patient care on a 591-bed university-affiliated medical center. You will work under the supervision of Registered Professional Nurses to assist with patient care activities and maintain a safe, orderly patient care environment.

Clinical Setting

Medicine Telemetry unit at NYU Langone Hospital—Long Island, a major regional healthcare resource offering sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic care across all medical and surgical specialties.

Responsibilities

• Assist with admission, transfer, and discharge of patients, including orienting patients to the hospital environment, assisting with clothing and property management, preparing bedside units, and escorting patients as needed
• Conduct patient rounds for toileting, positioning, comfort, safety, and personal needs; answer call lights and respond to patient needs promptly
• Assemble oxygen delivery systems (nasal cannula) and suction setups
• Provide basic hygiene care including bathing, AM/PM care, mouth care, denture care, hair care, nail and foot care, shaving, and assistance with bedpan, urinal, and commode use
• Prepare patients for meals by clearing overbed tables, positioning patients correctly, preparing utensils and food items, and assisting with feeding
• Perform and assist with simple treatments, including removing and reapplying SCD wraps as directed by the RN and assisting with enema procedures
• Collect specimens as directed by the RN
• Inform the RN of any audible clinical alarms from IV pumps, feeding pumps, ventilators, and bedside monitors
• Assist with moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients
• Assist with removal and security of patient personal items prior to procedures
• Change linen in accordance with policy and as necessary
• Take and electronically record vital signs including blood pressure, temperature, pulse, pulse oximetry, and respiration per care level standards; report abnormalities to the RN
• Weigh patients and electronically record on admission as ordered
• Measure and record oral intake, urinary output, bowel elimination, and drainage; calculate 8-hour totals and empty drainage bags
• Perform post mortem care
• Perform safety observations for patients on continuous observation or in restraints per policy
• Report any changes in patient condition to the RN
• Respond to patient and family needs and concerns with compassion and understanding; establish effective, caring relationships with staff, patients, families, and healthcare team members
• Maintain competence through in-service and educational programs
• Attend staff meetings and review meeting minutes
• Maintain a safe, uncluttered patient care environment; assist with supply and equipment management
• Maintain cleanliness of utility rooms and pantries as assigned
• Perform other duties such as errands, relieving other units, and assisting other healthcare team members as directed
• Discuss educational goals and plans with the Nurse Manager or Nursing Professional Development Specialist
• Demonstrate accountability for supplies, equipment, and environmental support
• Assist in collecting data for the unit's Quality and Performance Improvement Program
• Provide instruction and demonstrate desired skills to new nursing assistants
• Share feedback with new and current nursing assistants regarding development opportunities

Required Qualifications

• High School Diploma or equivalent
• Graduate of a Certified Nursing Attendant Program
• Current CNA certification
• Minimum 6 months of relevant experience
• BLS or Heartsaver CPR/AED certification issued by the American Heart Association (required upon entry to the position)
• Working knowledge of English demonstrated in verbal, reading, and writing abilities
• Strong customer service and communication skills

Compensation

• Hourly rate: $26.80
• Actual salary depends on experience, specialty, education, and hospital need
• Salary range does not include bonuses, incentive pay, differential pay, or other forms of compensation or benefits
