The opportunity

Job Description

Hackensack Meridian Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician for the Women's Medical/Surgical unit on a part-time day schedule with benefits. This position provides direct patient care to a diverse patient population, working under the supervision of registered nurses as part of an interdisciplinary healthcare team.

Clinical Setting

You will work on a Women's Medical/Surgical unit, providing care to patients across the age spectrum from newborn through geriatric populations. The role focuses on expanding your clinical knowledge and skills while delivering safe, effective care that promotes patient satisfaction, comfort, and safety.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety criteria appropriate to patient age
  • Obtain and document vital signs including temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation; notify the RN immediately of abnormal results
  • Perform venipuncture and blood draws using proper aseptic techniques; ensure appropriate specimen labeling and processing
  • Perform EKG for patients as directed
  • Apply bandages, slings, compression boots, and hypothermia blankets according to standards
  • Perform and document glucose finger sticks and collect other specimens as directed
  • Provide direct hygiene and comfort care including bathing, toileting, oral hygiene, incontinent care, and bed making
  • Assist patients with dressing, undressing, and management of personal belongings
  • Obtain and document patient weights and monitor intake and output
  • Prepare patients for assessment, admission, physical examination, and procedures
  • Welcome patients and verify proper identification bracelets
  • Assist with patient meals or feeding as needed
  • Transport patients to other departments or units as requested
  • Check inventory and restock assigned areas as directed
  • Ensure room environments are prepared for admission and maintain cleanliness
  • Check and maintain code carts, oxygen, and emergency medical equipment as directed
  • Provide postmortem care
  • Answer call lights promptly and communicate with the RN immediately regarding any changes in patient condition
  • Identify and modify care delivery to meet specific patient population needs including considerations for age, culture, language, hearing impairment, and visual impairment
  • Participate in interdisciplinary collaboration on patient care plans from admission through discharge
  • Participate in unit and department performance improvement activities
  • Demonstrate self-directed initiative to improve job performance and create new opportunities
  • Adhere to organizational competencies and standards of behavior

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Completion of one of the following:
  • Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, or Patient Care Technician program
  • Fundamentals of Nursing program from an accredited school of nursing
  • HMH PCT Apprenticeship Program
  • Or equivalent medical background experience such as EMT, Home Health Aide, CMA, MA, PCT, or Nursing Assistant
  • Candidates without formal program completion but meeting other requirements may be considered for the HMH PCT Apprentice Program and hired as a PCT Apprentice; upon successful completion, transfer to the Patient Care Technician role
  • Ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing patient needs

Licenses and Certifications

  • Medical Office Assistant Certification

Schedule and Compensation

This is a part-time position with day shift hours and benefits eligibility. The starting minimum rate is $21.77 per hour. Hackensack Meridian Health is committed to pay equity and transparency. The posted rate represents a reasonable good faith estimate of minimum base pay at the time of posting in accordance with the New Jersey Pay Transparency Act and does not reflect the full value of the market-competitive total rewards package. Actual compensation at the time of offer may differ based on factors including labor market data, relevant work experience, education and certifications, demonstrated skills, geographic location, internal equity considerations, and departmental budgets. Some positions may be eligible for performance-based incentives, bonuses, or shift differentials for evening, night, or weekend work.
