The opportunity

Job Description

Join the Vascular and Neuroscience Intermediate and Acute Care Unit (2RC) at University of Iowa Health Care as a Patient Care Technician. This 34-bed intermediate acute care unit specializes in comprehensive care for adult patients with neurological, neurosurgical, and vascular conditions. You will work with patients requiring telemetry or intensive neurological monitoring, including those with stroke, general neurology conditions, neurointerventional radiology cases, and vascular specialties.

Responsibilities

  • Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure
  • Perform phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, and Foley catheter removal using proper medical asepsis
  • Care for patients who are medically isolated
  • Perform simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative skin preparation, dressing changes, and specimen collection
  • Apply binders and braces as directed
  • Perform special duties as taught by the nurse in charge, including ECG lead and 12-lead placement and brace/pin site care
  • Assist with patient admission, transfers, and discharges
  • Provide direct patient care including personal hygiene and comfort measures
  • Turn, position, and ambulate patients
  • Transport patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies
  • Feed patients and serve drinking water and nourishments; record intake
  • Assist patients with bedpans and urinals; record output
  • Participate in nursing care conferences and report pertinent patient information and incidents to the nurse in charge
  • Provide comfort measures through social interactions
  • Share responsibility for equipment and supply preparation, proper use and care, and unit cleanliness
  • Assemble and maintain equipment and supplies for diagnostic or treatment procedures
  • Clean unit areas per designated guidelines using approved disinfectants and cleaning products
  • Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units

Schedule

  • Part-time position at 60% FTE
  • Rotating shifts
  • Rotating weekends
  • Rotating holidays
