As a Patient Care Technician, you will provide safe, effective, and efficient patient care under the direction of assigned licensed nurses. You will assist with obtaining patient information, orienting patients to the care environment, and monitoring patients for changes or special risks such as falls and skin breakdown. This is a non-union role.
Responsibilities
- Assist with obtaining basic patient information as part of nursing history and ongoing assessment, reporting abnormal values to the appropriate nurse
- Orient patients to the care environment to promote comfort and safety
- Observe and report obvious physical and emotional patient changes to the assigned nurse
- Monitor patients for special risks including falls and skin breakdown, reporting observations to the assigned nurse
- Make regular patient visits to provide quick response to patient needs
- Seek guidance in prioritizing multiple demands to effectively meet patient needs
- Demonstrate knowledge and skills appropriate to the age of patients served in your assigned work area, recognizing normal and abnormal vital sign parameters
- Document completely and accurately according to unit and division standards, including safety measures
- Remain calm and effective in emergency situations and follow appropriate guidelines
- Perform all assigned skills and duties as outlined in care plans, critical pathways, competencies, skills lists, standards, policies, and procedures
- Demonstrate manual dexterity to perform precise skills required for patient care
- Operate and maneuver patient care equipment safely
- Initiate equipment to ensure patient safety, including bed alarms, side rails, trapeze, and restraints
- Use proper body mechanics to safely transfer and move patients
- Practice infection control procedures and observe Standard Precautions, including appropriate use of Personal Protective Equipment
- Demonstrate knowledge of your role in emergency situations including Code 99, Code Red, Code 13, and Code D
- Maintain your area of responsibility in neat and orderly condition
- Stock and return equipment and supplies to proper storage areas
- Report broken and unsafe equipment to appropriate personnel or the Department Manager
Required Qualifications
- Current Maryland certification in good standing as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), OR completion of the first clinical year of an NLN-approved nursing program, OR graduation from an approved RN or LPN program, OR EMT-B or Armed Forces Corpsman certification
- Basic Life Support – Health Care Provider (BLS-HCP) certification
- Less than one year of experience required
- High school diploma or GED equivalent
- Basic employment skills
- Basic knowledge and working experience with medical terminology
Additional Certification Requirements
- Certification in Pre-Transport/Post-resuscitation Stabilization Care of Sick Infants Guidelines for Neonatal Healthcare Providers (STABLE) is required for staff assigned to NICU (672), Post-Partum (651), or Labor & Delivery (708) units
Schedule
- Self-scheduling required: 24 hours of weekend time during each 4-week scheduling period
- Must work 1 Summer and 1 Winter holiday annually
Compensation
- Pay Range: $17.48 - $24.76 per hour
