The opportunity

Job Description

Join the Hyperbaric Treatment and Wound Care Center at Kuakini Medical Center as a Patient Care Technician Trainee. In this on-call position, you will collaborate with providers to facilitate patient care and coordinate treatment activities in a specialized hyperbaric medicine setting. You will assist during patient evaluations, prepare medical charts, prepare the hyperbaric chamber for use, ensure patient comfort and proper chamber orientation, and provide education to patients and families. You will serve as a care provider during daily scheduled and emergent hyperbaric treatments.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in HTC training, safety drills, and monthly meetings
  • Contribute to the monthly on-call schedule

Training and Career Path

You will start as a Trainee at $18.00 per hour and be promoted to Patient Care Technician I upon successful completion of the trainee period. The trainee period includes completion of a Didactic Care Provider Course provided by HTC, passing a hyperbaric physical exam, and completing an in-chamber pressurization test. These steps are required before advancing to the Clinical Provider Course. Training duration varies based on availability and your base knowledge.

There are three levels of Patient Care Technician positions (I, II, and III), each with increasing levels of responsibility and required licensure or certification. Patient Care Technician II and III positions require ACLS certification.

Schedule

  • On-call: 12-24 hours per week during training
  • Minimum of 6 assigned hours and 4 call shifts per month
  • Maintain continuous availability and 30-minute response time while on-call
  • Location: Kuakini Medical Center, Hale Pulama Mau Building Ground Floor

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent or higher
  • Current credential in a clinical specialty or currently in training: Medical Assistant (MA), Nursing Assistant (NA), Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Dive Medical Technician (DMT), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), Registered Nurse (RN), Mobile Intensive Care Technician/Paramedic (MICT/EMT-P), Critical Care Nurse (CCRN), Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Practitioner (APRN), Physician's Assistant (PA), Respiratory Therapist (RT), or other relevant specialty
  • Current BLS certification from American Heart Association (required within 90 days of employment)
  • Enrollment in a Didactic/Clinical Care Provider Course as provided by HTC or equivalent hyperbaric facility (required to maintain employment)
  • Ability to lift 100 pounds (assisting incapacitated patients)
  • Successful completion of a hyperbaric physical exam and in-chamber pressurization test
  • Strong organizational skills and exceptional attention to detail
  • Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Google Suite
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work inside an enclosed, pressurized chamber environment with small quarters

Preferred Qualifications

  • One or more years of experience working in a healthcare or related facility
  • Current ACLS certification from American Heart Association
  • Certified Hyperbaric Technician or Certified Hyperbaric Registered Nurse (CHRN) certification through the National Board of Diving and Hyperbaric Medical Technology (NBDHMT)
  • Familiarity with hyperbaric environment, including hyperbaric chamber ancillary equipment and communication devices
  • Familiarity and experience with clinical equipment such as BP sphygmomanometer and blood glucose monitor
  • Working knowledge of electronic medical record systems

Important Restrictions

Due to safety concerns, individuals who are pregnant cannot enter the hyperbaric chamber. This restriction is based on potential risks associated with hyperbaric oxygen exposure during pregnancy.
