Patient Care Technician-TH ED-Day Shift (35 Hours)

Join NYU Langone Health as a Patient Care Technician in the Trauma/Hospitalist Emergency Department on a day shift (35 hours per week). In this role, you will assist professional nurses in providing competent, safe, and compassionate care to patients and families. You will support the nursing team by completing assigned patient care tasks while maintaining a focus on understanding the challenges patients face during hospitalization, procedures, and diagnostic testing.

Clinical Setting

You will work in a fast-paced emergency department environment within NYU Langone Health, a fully integrated health system consistently recognized for achieving some of the lowest mortality rates in the nation. The system includes 6 inpatient locations, the Perlmutter Cancer Center, and over 320 outpatient locations across the New York area and Florida.

Responsibilities

• Assist the professional nurse in patient care by completing assigned patient care tasks
• Utilize specialized clinical skills including phlebotomy, fingerstick glucose testing, and electrocardiograms (EKGs)
• Collect data for quality and performance improvement initiatives, including patient satisfaction measures
• Demonstrate understanding of infection prevention and control standards
• Assist with admission, transfer, and discharge procedures per unit operations
• Perform safety observations for patients on continuous observation or in restraints per policy
• Answer patient call lights promptly and provide assistance with personal care and activities
• Report all observations concerning patients to the assigned professional nurse
• Maintain cleanliness and safety of the nursing unit, patient rooms, and patient care areas
• Ensure necessary equipment and supplies are present in patient rooms and on the unit
• Provide security for patients' personal property and handle valuables according to hospital procedure
• Assist in emergency situations as directed
• Support all team members, including registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, physicians, nursing attendants, patient unit clerks, and other healthcare employees
• Assist patients in preparing for scheduled appointments, including placement on stretchers or wheelchairs
• Run errands to other departments, including delivery of specimens and equipment
• Participate in the orientation of other patient care technicians
• Participate in unit meetings and conferences
• Complete annual mandatory education requirements for patient care technicians
• Recognize own limitations and request assistance when needed
• Communicate responsiveness and support to patients, families, and staff both verbally and non-verbally

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• One of the following:
• Graduate of a Patient Care Technician (PCT) program with at least 6 months of hospital experience
• Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) graduate plus course completion in EKG and Phlebotomy with PCT certification eligibility and at least 6 months of hospital experience
• PCT Certification through National Healthcareer Association (NHA) with at least 6 months of hospital experience
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or Heartsaver CPR/AED certification issued by the American Heart Association (AHA) required upon entry to the position
• Must complete PCT online program within 3 months of hire
• Working knowledge of English demonstrated in verbal, reading, and writing abilities
• Strong customer service and communication skills

Compensation

• Annual salary: $59,404.75
• Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need
• Salary does not include bonuses, incentive pay, differential pay, or other forms of compensation or benefits
