Patient Care Technician - Solid Organ Transplant/Nephrology (H9)

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) performs patient care tasks and duties that do not require a license, working as a trained member of the unit-based team in H9 Nephrology/Surgical Specialties at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences.

Clinical Setting

H9 Nephrology/Surgical Specialties is a 30-bed medical/surgical adult inpatient unit serving patients from adolescent age to geriatrics. The unit specializes in the care of adult renal and liver failure patients, solid organ transplant patients, hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis patients, general surgery patients, and colorectal and urology patients.

Responsibilities

• Obtain patient report and maintain ongoing communication with the Registered Nurse regarding patient care and changes in condition
• Inform the nurse of patient requests or complaints
• Assist with admission, transfer, and discharge of patients
• Transport patients to other areas of the hospital as directed
• Carry out the Plan of Care for patients using a multidisciplinary approach as delegated by the team leader
• Communicate effectively with other team members to facilitate patient care
• Accept directions from RNs and team members
• Follow through on delegated patient care activities
• Provide appropriate grooming and oral hygiene and assist patients with comfort measures and activities including ambulation, positioning in chair, turning, and repositioning
• Document all patient care activities, tasks, vital signs, activities of daily living (ADL), wave tests, and intake and output (I&O) accurately and timely per unit and department standards
• Assist patients and visitors with information and solutions to problems
• Serve as a resource person to support department members in performance of duties
• Notify appropriate staff members of problems requiring prompt intervention
• Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED
• Successful completion of a patient care technician course within 3 months of hire
• Excellent communication skills
• Ability to follow oral instructions
• Basic computer skills
• Strong work ethics and accountability
• Ability to lift 100 lbs. to waist height
• Capability to don and perform routine tasks in personal protective equipment including N95 masks, Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPR), or Controlled Air Purifying Respirators (CAPR)

Preferred Qualifications

• Certification as a nursing assistant or military corpsman
• Six months or more of patient care experience in an acute care setting

Physical Requirements

• Visual requirements: Near visual acuity, far visual acuity, color discrimination, depth perception, peripheral vision
• Exposure to biological, chemical, electrical, and radiation hazards, sharp objects and tools, and dust
