The opportunity

Job Description

UPMC East is hiring a Part-time Patient Care Technician Senior to support the Clinical Decision Unit (CDU). The CDU provides a unique blend of emergency department acuity with an inpatient unit environment, caring for adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. This position offers exposure to a varied patient population and clinical decision-making in a structured departmental setting.

Schedule

  • Part-time position requiring 2 twelve-hour rotating shifts per week
  • Shift times: 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM or 6:00 PM to 6:00 AM
  • Title will be determined based on candidate's individual experience

Responsibilities

  • Perform core nursing assistant duties including activities of daily living (bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, turning, repositioning), vital signs, intake and output, blood glucose monitoring, weights, specimen collection, and Foley catheter care
  • Perform advanced clinical tasks based on departmental need:
  • Phlebotomy
  • 12-lead EKG
  • Simple dressings
  • Foley catheter insertion and removal
  • IV insertion, removal, and dressing changes
  • Bladder scan
  • Femoral hemostasis
  • Telemetry monitor application and reapplication
  • NG tube clamping and removal
  • Assist with physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies
  • Provide feedback to RN and report changes in patient status
  • Provide instruction to patients and families under RN direction
  • Apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints per protocol
  • Transport cardiac-monitored patients within the hospital
  • May be present in rooms where medications are stored or transport medications between departments
  • Respond to call lights, telephones, pass meal trays, and transport patients as part of universal unit activities
  • Suggest and support departmental changes and quality initiatives
  • Establish appropriate communication with other departments and maintain professional interpersonal relationships
  • Strictly adhere to all policies, procedures, and safety standards
  • Document in the medical record according to established procedures
  • Demonstrate clear and effective communication with all healthcare team members
  • Receive feedback constructively and identify learning needs
  • Report equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One of the following:
  • 2 years of general healthcare experience and meet requirements of Patient Care Technician title, OR
  • 1 year of healthcare experience and enrollment in PT/OT/PA program with completion of at least one clinical rotation, OR
  • 1 year of healthcare experience and completion of a bachelor's degree in a health sciences field
  • Successful completion of patient care technician senior class
  • Successful completion of basic information system training
  • Annual completion of a professional contribution to be determined after hire
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required within 30 days of hire based on AHA standards (includes didactic and skills demonstration)
  • Comprehensive Crisis Management (CCMC) required within 60 days of hire
  • Act 31 Child Abuse Reporting with renewal
  • Act 33 with renewal
  • Act 34 with renewal
  • Act 73 FBI Clearance with renewal

Preferred Qualifications

  • Microcomputer experience and ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing
  • Nursing student who has completed one clinical rotation
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Paramedic certification, or currently enrolled in an EMT or Paramedic program
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
  • Completion of a basic arrhythmia course with annual competency
