IU Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician (also known as a Patient Care Assistant or PCA) for a full-time day position in Pre-Op PACU. As a bedside caregiver, you will provide direct patient care and support the nursing team in delivering a high-quality patient experience.
Clinical Setting
You will work in the Pre-Op PACU (Post-Anesthesia Care Unit) environment, supporting patients in the perioperative period. You will work under the direction of registered nurses as a non-licensed team member.
Responsibilities
- Provide activities of daily living assistance to designated patients
- Obtain and report vital signs, identifying and communicating abnormalities or changes in patient behavior to the primary RN or charge nurse
- Assist patients with mobility, using appropriate safety measures such as gait belts and bed/chair alarms
- Provide drinks, assist with meal ordering, and encourage ambulation
- Assist with patient hygiene, baths, and provide clean linens and gowns
- Maintain continuous observation of patients, including suicide prevention monitoring
- Ensure patients' surroundings are clean, safe, and orderly
- Maintain patient safety by staying within arm's reach when assisting with movement
- Support the interdisciplinary patient care team
Required Qualifications
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association, or attainment at completion of the IU Health PCA education program
- Knowledge of care appropriate to the age and developmental level of patients served
- Up-to-date knowledge of procedures and standards related to patient care activities
- Proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to maintain constant mental awareness and withstand high levels of tension and stress
- Ability to maintain concentration when subjected to frequent interruptions and variable noise levels
- Ability to exercise judgment and initiative in problem resolution
- Ability to set priorities and manage high workload within limited timeframes
- Knowledge of infection control principles
- Ability to perform physically demanding and repetitious movements
- Ability to read and perform basic math
- Ability to organize tasks and attend to details
- Knowledge of personal hygiene principles and aseptic techniques to prevent infection
Additional Requirements
- Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies
