Job Description

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is hiring a Patient Care Technician (PCT) for the Progressive Ventilator Support Unit (PVSU), an eight-bed step-down unit specializing in the care of patients on mechanical ventilators. This is a full-time, night shift position working three 12-hour shifts per week (36 hours total) from 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM with rotating weekends. Most patients admitted to PVSU transition from an Intensive Care Unit (ICU). The unit focuses on maximizing rehabilitation while continuing to treat the underlying illness through intensive physical therapy, respiratory care, and mental stimulation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care and support for independent and dependent activities of daily living
  • Monitor and record vital signs
  • Assist with patient mobility and ambulation
  • Perform phlebotomy and point of care testing
  • Conduct EKG testing
  • Remove peripheral IV lines
  • Collect specimens
  • Insert and remove foley catheters
  • Observe and document patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions in a timely and accurate manner
  • Report any changes in patient condition to the nurse or medical staff
  • Comply with patient safety practices under the direction of the professional RN nurse

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • One of the following:
  • Sentara Care Partner Certification Program completion, or
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification, or
  • National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) certification, or
  • National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT) certification, or
  • Completion of US Navy Hospital Corps School, or
  • Emergency Services certification (EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic), or
  • Current enrollment in a clinical program (beyond prerequisites) with at least one semester completed in a Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Respiratory Therapist (RT), or Physical Therapist (PT) program, or
  • Current work experience within the last three years as a Patient Care Technician (PCT) or Nursing Assistant
  • AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 90 days of hire

  • One year of healthcare experience

Schedule

  • Night shift: 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM
  • Three 12-hour shifts per week (36 hours per week)
  • Rotating weekends

Compensation

  • Base pay range: $18.93 to $27.41 hourly
  • Additional compensation may be available, including shift differentials, on-call pay, overtime, shift premiums, extra-shift incentives, or bonus opportunities
  • Compensation within the range varies based on qualifications, experience, location, market conditions, and business needs
  • Annual discretionary bonus opportunity available if established system and employee eligibility criteria are met
