Gillette Children's is seeking a Patient Care Technician to join the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) team at the main St. Paul location. This 0.75 FTE position combines clerical support and direct patient care responsibilities in a specialized pediatric critical care environment.
Clinical Setting
You will work in the PICU, providing support to the nursing team and assisting with the care of critically ill children and adolescents.
Responsibilities
- Perform nursing-delegated functions including venipuncture, IV starts, and assistance with medical procedures
- Assist professional nurses in meeting basic activities of daily living (ADL) needs for patients
- Maintain an orderly and safe physical environment
- Transcribe and accurately process provider orders
- Maintain unit supplies and equipment through routine inventories and ordering
- Coordinate communication flow within and between departments to ensure efficient unit function
- Interact with patients and families in a manner that reinforces family-focused care principles
- Maintain all special-order supplies and equipment
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives and unit planning
- Contribute to professional growth activities that support patient satisfaction and care quality
Schedule
- 0.75 FTE (60 hours per pay period)
- 12-hour shifts
- Straight nights
- Every third weekend
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Current CPR certification (BLS for Healthcare Providers by the American Heart Association). If you hold valid CPR for Healthcare Providers through another acceptable organization as determined by Gillette, you may begin employment but must complete CPR BLS for Healthcare Providers by the American Heart Association within one month of employment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Healthcare experience such as Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Emergency Medical Technician, Paramedic, Military Medical Training, or Phlebotomy certification
- Pediatric healthcare experience
- Knowledge of venipuncture, IV starts, and prior experience assisting with medical procedures
- Ability to transcribe physician orders and knowledge of medical terminology
- Interest in working with children and adolescents with disabilities and their families
- Demonstrated skill in interpersonal communication with patients, families, co-workers, and physicians
Physical Requirements
- Physically able to work the required hours and transport/transfer patients
- Potential exposure to infectious disease and hazardous substances
Compensation and Benefits
- Hourly wage: $22.50 to $31.75 per hour, with a median wage of $26.47 per hour. Pay is dependent on relevant work experience, education, certification, licensure, and internal equity.
