Patient Care Technician / PCT / OU Float

The Patient Care Technician I provides direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) at Emory Healthcare. This is a facility-based float pool position designed to provide clinical resources across various patient care departments throughout an Emory Healthcare operating unit. You will work in different clinical areas based on skill set, patient volume, acuity, and the facility's patient care and operational needs.

Responsibilities

Clinical Practice and Patient Care

• Perform assigned patient care duties including hygiene, comfort, rest, mobility, and elimination support
• Assist with patient procedures and emergencies as directed by RN/LPN
• Record patient intake and output and document observations accurately and in a timely manner
• Provide support in patient admission, transfer, and discharge processes
• Assist with range of motion, ambulation, patient transfers, diet, and postmortem care
• Observe and report significant or unusual patient or environmental information to RN/LPN
• Utilize appropriate technology and equipment safely in the provision of care

Equipment and Technical Skills

• Assist in the use of clinical devices including bag-valve-mask, anti-embolism stockings, pneumatic compression stockings, oxygen, suction equipment, incentive spirometer, and emergency carts
• Operate patient care equipment such as converter chairs, lifts, scales, beds, stretchers, wheelchairs, non-invasive blood pressure monitors, automatic thermometers, sphygmomanometers, pulse oximeters, and computers
• Collect and transport patient specimens and ensure timely completion of applicable forms
• Transport patients safely throughout the hospital as needed

Team Collaboration and Communication

• Communicate effectively with patients, families, and members of the patient care team
• Promote a supportive and healing environment to enhance patient and staff satisfaction
• Participate in unit-based and system-wide performance improvement programs as required
• Collaborate with nursing staff to ensure individualized care is delivered according to patient needs

Compliance and Safety

• Adhere to Standard Precautions, Infection Control procedures, and safety guidelines to maintain a clean and safe environment
• Ensure compliance with standards of care, Department of Nursing policies, and hospital procedures
• May participate in research projects impacting patient care
• Maintain hospital and unit-specific competencies

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent
• BLS certification

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous healthcare experience

This position involves medium to heavy physical demands:

• Lifting up to 75 lbs maximum
• Carrying objects up to 35 lbs
• Occasional to frequent standing and walking
• Occasional sitting
• Close eye work including computers, typing, reading, and writing
• Lifting 36-75 lbs occasionally (0-33% of work day)
• Lifting 20-35 lbs frequently (34-66% of work day)
