Patient Care Technician (PCT) - OMCBR Labor and Delivery - PRN, Nights

Ochsner Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician (PCT) for the Labor and Delivery unit at OMCBR. This PRN, night shift position provides essential patient care support under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse. You will work collaboratively with the nursing team to maintain patient safety, provide basic patient care, and support the delivery of obstetric services.

Clinical Setting

You will work in a Labor and Delivery environment, providing care to patients during labor, delivery, and postpartum periods. The role involves direct patient contact, exposure to blood and body fluids, and potential exposure to communicable diseases inherent to healthcare settings.

Responsibilities

• Assist with the plan of care as delegated by the staff nurse within scope of practice
• Maintain a clean and safe environment in the patient care area
• Provide care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety criteria appropriate to the patient population
• Communicate patient care needs effectively with patients, families, and interdisciplinary team members
• Provide constant observation of patients and notify nursing personnel of changes in behavior or status
• Intervene as needed to maintain patient safety
• Complete documentation of patient-related tasks
• Maintain professional certifications and technical knowledge
• Adapt behavior and communication to the specific patient population, including respect for privacy and appropriate explanation of procedures
• Comply with all policies, standards, and regulatory requirements
• Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• Certified Patient Care Technician/Assistant (CPCT/A) through the National Health Career Association
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association (must be obtained within 30 days of hire)
• Crisis Prevention and Intervention (CPI) certification (must be obtained within 30 days of hire)
• Computer skills and dexterity for data entry and information retrieval
• Proficiency with Windows-style applications and various software packages specific to the role
• Effective verbal and written communication skills
• Excellent organizational and time management skills
• Ability to work a flexible schedule including 24/7 availability, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts

Preferred Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED
• Hospital and telemetry experience

Physical Demands

This position requires medium work, exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 10 to 25 pounds frequently, and greater than negligible up to 10 pounds constantly. Duties routinely involve exposure to blood, body fluids, and tissue. You will work directly with patients and specimens that may contain communicable diseases. There may be occupational risk for exposure to hazardous medications or hazardous waste through receipt, transport, storage, preparation, dispensing, administration, cleaning, and disposal of contaminated materials.
