This position provides basic technical assistance and supportive patient care to individuals within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD) correctional healthcare settings. As a Patient Care Technician, you will work under the direction of the charge nurse to deliver direct patient care in a correctional environment.
Responsibilities
- Collect, report, and document vital signs, height and weight, intake and output, and pulse oximetry readings
- Collect and process patient specimens
- Perform and report point-of-care testing (POCT)
- Assist patients with activities of daily living as directed by the charge nurse, including personal hygiene and feeding
- Ambulate, position, and turn patients; provide care for patients with altered mobility
- Assist with patient safety measures appropriate to age and condition
- Assist with patient restraints and safety precautions specific to the correctional environment
- Collect, report, and document data related to patient needs, emergencies, and behavioral observations
- Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality of all information and records
- Maintain clean, safe patient care environments and assist with aseptic technique, isolation procedures, and infection control measures
- Stock and maintain patient care areas with appropriate supplies
- Adhere to internal controls and reporting structures
Clinical Setting
This role is located within a correctional facility (prison, jail, or juvenile detention center). You will work in a secure healthcare environment serving incarcerated or detained populations.
Occupational Hazards
You may be exposed to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, hazardous medications, and disoriented or combative patients.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Completion of one of the following:
- Recognized Nurse Assistant program, OR
- Medical Assistant program, OR
- Medical Corpsman program, OR
- EMT program, OR
- UTMB Hospital Aide training program, OR
- Two years of experience in a direct patient care environment, OR
- Currently enrolled in a recognized School of Nursing program with completion of the first semester containing clinical concepts and health assessment or equivalent
- Current BLS-HP certification
- Security clearance (required)
- Pre-employment drug testing (required)
Compensation
Salary is commensurate with years of relevant work experience.
