Join Emory Healthcare as a Patient Care Technician in the Hematology unit (8T S). In this role, you will provide direct patient care and support under the direction of Registered Nurses and Licensed Practical Nurses. You will work with patients receiving hematology treatment, assisting with their comfort, hygiene, and clinical needs while maintaining a clean and safe environment.
Responsibilities
- Perform patient care and observation duties including room cleaning, equipment operation, and assistance with patient procedures
- Collect and transport patient specimens and complete applicable documentation
- Communicate effectively with patients, families, and members of the patient care team
- Assist with emergency situations as directed by nursing staff
- Ensure prescribed measures related to hygiene, comfort, and rest are provided
- Comply with Standard Precautions, Infection Control procedures, and safety standards
- Assist with use of clinical equipment including bag-valve-mask devices, anti-embolism stockings, pneumatic compression stockings, oxygen, suction equipment, incentive spirometer, emergency cart, and bedside glucose monitoring
- Operate converter chairs, lifts, scales, beds, stretchers, wheelchairs, non-invasive BP monitors, automatic thermometers, sphygmomanometers, pulse oximeters, and computers
- Record patient intake and output
- Assist with range of motion, ambulation, patient transfers, diet, elimination, and hygiene
- Observe and report significant or unusual patient information to nursing staff and document appropriately and timely
- Transport patients and specimens throughout the hospital
- Contribute to patient admission, transfer, and discharge processes
- Assist with postmortem care
- Participate in unit-based and system-wide performance improvement programs
- Serve as a resource and model through compliance with standards of care and departmental policies
- May participate in research projects impacting patient care areas
- Participate in orientation of nursing support assistants to the unit
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- BLS certification
- One year of direct patient care experience, OR successful completion of a nursing assistant training course, OR Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) license through the State of Georgia, OR current enrollment in a nursing program with completion of 2 clinical rotations
Physical Requirements
This position involves medium to heavy physical demands. You may be required to lift up to 75 pounds maximum, carry objects up to 35 pounds, and stand or walk frequently throughout the shift. Occasional sitting is required. Close eye work involving computers, typing, reading, and writing is necessary. Physical demands may vary depending on assigned work area and tasks.
Environmental Factors
You will be exposed to blood-borne pathogens, bio-hazardous waste, chemicals, gases, fumes, vapors, communicable diseases, electrical shock hazards, varying floor surfaces, hot and cold temperatures, indoor and outdoor conditions, latex, varying lighting conditions, patient care and handling injury risks, radiation, and shift work. Use of personal protective equipment, including respirators, is required. Environmental conditions may vary depending on assigned work area and tasks. Travel may be required.
