St. Elizabeth Boardman Hospital is seeking a Patient Care Technician (PCT) for our float pool. The PCT provides direct patient care under the guidance of a Registered Nurse or designated healthcare professional, performing a variety of age-specific duties to assist in patient care in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations and organizational policies.
This is a per diem position requiring a minimum of 24 hours of work within a 6-week period.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED preferred
- One of the following:
- Current enrollment as a nursing student in an RN program with at least one clinical semester completed in an acute care hospital setting, OR
- State-tested Nurse Assistant (STNA) certification or completion of a Health Care Assistant (HCA) training course with certification related to acute care, OR
- Minimum one year of relevant experience in a clinical setting (hospital or long-term care)
- BLS certification by American Heart Association
- Computer literacy and basic computer skills
- Experience providing direct patient care
Responsibilities
- Perform general patient care including bathing, mouth care, changing linens, dressing patients, back rubs, hygiene, and elimination assistance
- Obtain and record vital signs, height, and weight
- Lift, ambulate, and transport patients, seeking assistance as needed
- Position patients and perform range of motion exercises; assist physical therapist as needed
- Perform venipunctures for blood collection
- Collect specimens (urine, sputum) and ensure timely transport to the laboratory
- Perform designated bedside laboratory tests
- Apply oxygen therapy
- Perform electrocardiograms (ECG)
- Perform wound care as directed by the RN
- Perform urinary catheterizations and enemas
- Observe universal precautions and aseptic techniques
- Perform computer order entry functions as required
- Chart patient information accurately following organizational standards
- Deliver menus, prepare patients for meals, distribute food trays, feed patients, and remove trays
- Distribute drinking water
- Answer phones courteously and address caller needs
- Initiate emergency procedures when necessary
- Observe patient responses and report adverse reactions or pertinent information to the RN and physician
- Anticipate patient needs and respond in a timely manner to patient and caregiver requests
- Provide friendly assistance to patients' family members and visitors with strong emphasis on customer service
- Assist with patient education and discharge planning under RN supervision
- Inventory unit and determine supply needs
- Assist in daily cleaning of patient rooms and care center; prepare rooms for incoming patients
- Assess and initiate maintenance requisitions for equipment, furniture, and building fixtures
- Perform simple maintenance tasks (light bulbs, batteries)
- Assist in orientation of new personnel
- Work overtime as needed
- Perform other duties as assigned
