The opportunity

Job Description

IU Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician (also known as a Patient Care Assistant or PCA) to provide compassionate bedside care on the 3E Acuity Adaptable unit in Bloomington. In this role, you will anticipate patient needs and provide direct support to the nursing team in a fast-paced hospital environment.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care including assisting with activities of daily living such as bathing, meal ordering, and providing drinks
  • Encourage patient mobility and assist with walking
  • Obtain and report vital signs, reporting any abnormalities or changes in patient behavior to the primary RN or charge nurse
  • Maintain patient safety by utilizing safety measures such as gait belts, bed and chair alarms, and maintaining close proximity during patient movement
  • Provide clean linens, gowns, and other comfort items
  • Support the bedside RN with clinical assistance to detect and facilitate rapid treatment

Schedule

  • Part-time position
  • Two 12-hour shifts per week
  • Days shift

Required Qualifications

  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA), or attainment at completion of the IU Health PCA education program
  • Knowledge of care appropriate to the age and developmental level of patients served
  • Up-to-date knowledge of procedures and standards related to patient care activities
  • Proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to maintain constant mental awareness and withstand high levels of tension and stress
  • Ability to maintain concentration when subjected to frequent interruptions and variable noise levels
  • Ability to exercise judgment and initiative in problem resolution
  • Ability to set priorities and manage high workloads within limited timeframes
  • Knowledge of procedures, equipment, software, and standards related to patient care activities performed by non-licensed roles
  • Knowledge of infection control principles
  • Ability to perform physically demanding and repetitious movements
  • Ability to read and perform basic math
  • Ability to organize tasks and attend to details
  • Knowledge of personal hygiene and aseptic techniques to prevent infection

Additional Requirements

  • Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit or department specialty according to patient care policies
