Job Description

Join the University of Iowa Health Care – North Liberty Campus as a Patient Care Technician on our new orthopedic inpatient unit. This is a part-time position (50% rotating schedule) in a state-of-the-art acute care facility designed to provide exceptional care to patients recovering from orthopedic surgeries and procedures, including joint replacements, fracture repairs, spinal surgeries, and more. The 36-bed unit features cutting-edge facilities and a collaborative team environment focused on patient-centered care.

Clinical Setting

The North Liberty Campus is a 469,000-square-foot facility serving as the home of UI Health Care's nationally recognized orthopedics service line. In addition to the inpatient orthopedic unit, the campus features a full-service community imaging center, laboratory services, physical therapy, a retail pharmacy, an emergency department, and comprehensive support services.

Responsibilities

  • Independently obtain and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respiration, and blood pressure
  • Perform medical asepsis when carrying out skills and tasks including phlebotomy, peripheral IV removal, and Foley catheter removal; care for patients who are medically isolated
  • Perform simple diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as enemas, preoperative skin preparation, dressing changes, specimen collection, and application of binders and braces
  • Perform special duties as taught and directed by the nurse in charge, including phlebotomy, ECG lead and 12-lead placement, and brace and pin site care
  • Assist with patient admission, transfers, and discharges
  • Provide direct patient care including personal hygiene and comfort measures
  • Turn, position, and ambulate patients
  • Transport patients, equipment, specimens, and supplies
  • Feed patients, serve drinking water and nourishments, and record patient intake
  • Assist patients with bedpans and urinals and record output
  • Participate in nursing care conferences and report pertinent patient information and incidents to the nurse in charge
  • Provide patient comfort measures through social interactions
  • Share responsibility for preparation, proper use, and care of equipment and supplies; maintain neatness and cleanliness of the unit
  • Assemble and maintain equipment and supplies in preparation for diagnostic or treatment procedures
  • Clean areas per designated guidelines and standards using approved disinfectants and cleaning products
  • Stock and supply patient rooms and nursing units

Schedule
