Patient Care Technician - Neuroscience

This is a night shift Patient Care Technician position in the Neuroscience specialty at Halifax Health. You will provide direct para-professional nursing care to patients across all age groups—from newborns to geriatric patients—in nursing units and the Emergency Department. Your responsibilities will include phlebotomy, patient transportation, vital sign monitoring, EKG acquisition, point-of-care testing, and various clinical and clerical duties under the supervision of nursing staff.

Clinical Setting

• Neuroscience nursing units and Emergency Department
• Patient care areas and nurse stations
• Night shift schedule

Responsibilities

• Perform phlebotomy and prepare blood samples for testing according to hospital policy
• Transport patients safely and timely within the hospital
• Obtain and document patient vital signs
• Assist with placement of oxygen saturation, blood pressure monitoring, and cardiac monitoring
• Obtain 12-lead EKGs according to best practices and hospital policy
• Demonstrate basic ECG interpretation
• Perform point-of-care glucose testing according to hospital policy
• Conduct patient assessments in an appropriate and timely fashion
• Assist with resuscitation, CPR, and emergency airway procedures within scope of practice
• Assist in care of all patient encounters, including emergencies, within scope of practice
• Document procedures performed within scope of skills checklist
• Collaborate with patients, families, and team members to establish interventions and goals
• Assist with orienting and precepting new team members, students, and volunteers
• Assist with unit responsibilities and duties as assigned
• Maintain certifications and education requirements
• Accept change of assignments as requested

Required Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED equivalent
• Current BLS certification within 7 days of hire
• Ability to communicate effectively and maintain composure in stressful situations
• Basic computer skills or ability to learn and use hospital computer systems
• Effective communication skills with unit staff and other departments
• Reliable attendance and punctuality
• Adherence to HIPAA and EMTALA laws

Preferred Qualifications

• Knowledge of medical terminology
