The opportunity

Job Description

Northwestern Medicine is seeking a Patient Care Technician for the Neuro Med Surg unit on the night shift. In this role, you will work under the supervision of an RN to provide basic patient care activities and support the clinical team in delivering quality care to patients.

Clinical Setting

You will work on a Neuro Medical-Surgical unit, assisting with patient care for patients requiring neurological and general medical-surgical care.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic nursing care activities as delegated and supervised by an RN, including monitoring vital signs, taking blood glucose measurements, and recording intake and output
  • Assist patients with personal care and activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming, and eating
  • Report abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental, and emotional conditions to nursing staff
  • Keep patient rooms clean and orderly
  • Demonstrate flexibility, organization, and multi-tasking abilities while functioning under stressful situations
  • Use critical thinking skills to prioritize and complete unit work as patient and unit needs change
  • Serve as a liaison between patient care units and other patient-related departments
  • Answer telephone, intercom, and call lights in a polite manner using appropriate telephone etiquette
  • Communicate information to appropriate staff, family, and patients
  • Manage overall unit workflow in concert with the charge RN and/or assistant manager as needed
  • Perform pre-census and validate daily admission, discharge, and census lists as needed

Schedule

This is a part-time position working 48 hours per pay period on the night shift from 7:00 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. with alternating weekends and holidays.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or current nursing school student with at least one semester of clinical completed
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • Phlebotomy experience
  • Graduate of an accredited Nursing Assistant program or graduate of a Phlebotomy course
