Patient Care Technician - Med/Surg - Per Diem Night

Hackensack Meridian Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician for a per diem night position on a Medical/Surgical unit. In this role, you will provide direct patient care across the lifespan, supporting nursing staff and the interdisciplinary care team in delivering safe, effective patient outcomes.

Clinical Setting

You will work on a Medical/Surgical unit in a hospital setting, providing care to patients from newborn through geriatric populations. This is a per diem night shift position.

Responsibilities

• Provide patient care based on physical, psychosocial, educational, and safety criteria appropriate to patient age
• Welcome patients, verify identification bracelets, and prepare patients for assessment, admission, physical examination, and procedures
• Obtain and document vital signs including temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, and oxygen saturation; notify the RN immediately of abnormal results
• Perform venipuncture and blood draws using proper aseptic technique; ensure appropriate labeling and processing of specimens
• Perform EKG for patients as directed
• Perform and document glucose finger sticks and collect other specimens as directed
• Apply bandages, slings, compression boots, and hypothermia blankets as directed by the RN
• Provide direct hygiene and comfort care including bathing, toileting, oral hygiene, incontinent care, and bed making
• Assist patients with dressing, undressing, and management of personal belongings
• Obtain and document patient weights and monitor and document intake and output
• Assist with patient meals and feeding as needed
• Transport patients to departments or units as requested
• Check and maintain code cart, oxygen, and other emergency medical equipment as directed
• Ensure room environment is prepared for admission and that necessary equipment is present, functional, and clean
• Check inventory of assigned area and restock as directed
• Provide a safe patient environment by answering call lights promptly and communicating with the RN immediately for any change in patient condition
• Provide post mortem care
• Identify patient population needs and modify care delivery specific to those needs, including considerations for age, culture, language, hearing impairment, and visual impairment
• Communicate with patients, parents, and primary caregivers at their developmental, educational, and literacy level
• Participate in interdisciplinary collaboration on the patient's plan of care from admission to discharge
• Participate in unit and department performance improvement activities
• Perform other duties and projects as assigned

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
• Completion of one of the following:
• Certified Nursing Assistant, Medical Assistant, or Patient Care Technician program
• Fundamentals of Nursing program from an accredited school of nursing
• HMH PCT Apprenticeship Program
• Or equivalent medical background experience such as EMT, Home Health Aide, CMA, MA, PCT, or Nursing Assistant
• Candidates without formal program completion but meeting other requirements may be considered for the HMH PCT Apprentice Program and hired as a PCT Apprentice; upon successful completion, transfer to Patient Care Technician role
• Ability to learn quickly and adapt to changing patient needs

• Ability and commitment to deliver highest quality care and service with strong patient focus
• AHA Basic Health Care Life Support (BLS) HCP Certification required within 60 days of entering position

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience or certification in phlebotomy and EKG
• Experience checking vital signs and blood sugar
• At least one year of PCT or CNA experience in a hospital setting
• Certified Nursing Assistant, Certified Medical Assistant, or Patient Care Technician with successful completion of a PCT program including phlebotomy, EKG, and nursing assistant coursework in both theoretical and clinical settings

Compensation and Benefits

Starting minimum rate: $19.85 per hour. Compensation is determined based on labor market data, relevant work experience, education and certifications, demonstrated skills, geographic location, internal equity, and departmental budgets. Certain positions may be eligible for shift differentials for evening, night, or weekend work.
