Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital is hiring a Patient Care Technician for the Med/Surg 4 West Unit, a 24-bed inpatient nursing unit specializing in acute medical and surgical care. You will work under the direct supervision of professional nurses to provide patient care, support admissions and discharge processes, and comply with patient safety practices. This role involves observing patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions and reporting any changes to the nursing staff.

Clinical Setting

4 West is a medical/surgical telemetry unit caring for acutely ill or injured adult patients. The unit specializes in post-operative surgical patient care and manages a diverse patient population including:

  • General surgery (emergent and elective)
  • Da Vinci robotic surgery for colon, urology, and gynecology procedures
  • Urology procedures including TURB, continuous bladder irrigation, and stent placement
  • Gynecology surgeries including bladder and colon resections
  • Vascular procedures including amputations, femoral popliteal bypass, and fistulas
  • Mastectomies and breast reconstruction at various stages
  • Soft tissue traumas including gunshot and stab wounds, motor vehicle accidents, and chest tube management
  • Medical conditions such as diverticulitis, Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, kidney injury, sepsis, pneumonia, asthma, and diabetes

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care under the supervision of a professional nurse
  • Support the patient admission and discharge process
  • Observe and monitor patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions
  • Report any changes in patient condition to the nursing staff
  • Comply with patient safety practices and protocols

Schedule

  • Full-time position
  • Night shift: approximately 7:00 PM to 7:00 AM

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • American Heart Association BLS certification required within 90 days of hire
  • One of the following:
  • Sentara Care Partner Certification Program completion
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification
  • National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) certification
  • National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT) certification
  • Completion of US Navy Hospital Corps School
  • Emergency Services certification (EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic)
  • Current enrollment in a clinical program (beyond prerequisites) with at least one semester completed in RN, LPN, RT, or PT
  • Current work experience within the last three years as a Patient Care Technician or Nursing Assistant
