Northwestern Medicine is seeking a Patient Care Technician for the Medical Surgical Observation unit on a part-time nights schedule. In this role, you will work under the supervision of an RN to provide basic patient care activities and support the clinical team in delivering quality patient care.
Clinical Setting
You will work in a Medical Surgical Observation unit at Northwestern Medicine, supporting patients during their observation stays and assisting with their care needs.
Responsibilities
- Perform basic nursing care activities as delegated and supervised by an RN, including monitoring vital signs, taking blood glucose measurements, and recording intake and output
- Assist patients with personal care and activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming, and eating
- Report abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental, and emotional conditions to nursing staff
- Keep patient rooms clean and orderly
- Answer telephone, intercom, and call lights in a polite manner using appropriate telephone etiquette
- Communicate information to appropriate staff, family, and patients
- Manage overall unit workflow in concert with the charge RN and/or assistant manager as needed
- Perform pre-census and validate daily admission, discharge, and census lists as needed
- Demonstrate flexibility, organization, and multi-tasking abilities while functioning effectively under stressful situations
- Utilize critical thinking skills to prioritize and complete unit work as unit needs, patient needs, and staff needs change
- Serve as liaison between patient care units and all other patient-related departments
Schedule
- 12 hours per week, part-time nights
- Non-benefits eligible
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or equivalent
- Current certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or current nursing school student with at least one semester of clinical completed
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
Preferred Qualifications
- Phlebotomy experience
- Graduate of an accredited Nursing Assistant program
- Graduate of a Phlebotomy course
