Patient Care Technician - Medical Oncology (H7) Day Shift

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) is seeking Patient Care Technicians for the H7 Medical Oncology Unit on a day shift basis. This is a full-time, regular position supporting a 30-bed unit that provides state-of-the-art therapies to medical oncology and family medicine patients.

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) performs patient care tasks that do not require a license, working under the direct supervision of Registered Nurses. You will be a trained member of the unit-based team supporting the delivery of care as identified by the multidisciplinary patient management team.

Clinical Setting

The H7 Medical Oncology Unit is a 30-bed inpatient unit with private rooms providing advanced therapies to a wide range of medical oncology patients. The unit supports learning in chemotherapy and biotherapy administration, management of IV central access devices, symptom management related to disease and treatment, emotional support, and palliative care. A strong interdisciplinary team including physicians, nurses, pharmacists, nutritionists, and social workers supports patients throughout their various therapies.

Responsibilities

• Obtain patient report and maintain ongoing communication with the RN regarding patient care and changes in condition
• Inform the nurse of patient requests or complaints
• Assist with admission, transfer, and discharge of patients
• Transport patients to other areas of the hospital as directed
• Carry out the Plan of Care for patients using a multidisciplinary approach as delegated by the team leader
• Communicate effectively with other team members to facilitate patient care
• Accept directions from RNs and team members
• Follow through on delegated patient care activities
• Provide appropriate grooming, oral hygiene, and comfort measures
• Assist patients with activities including ambulation, positioning in chair, turning, and repositioning
• Document all patient care activities, tasks, vital signs, ADLs, wave tests, and intake and output accurately and timely per unit and department standards
• Assist patients and visitors with information and solutions to problems
• Serve as a resource person to support department members in performance of duties
• Notify appropriate staff members of problems requiring prompt intervention
• Perform other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• Successful completion of a patient care technician course within 3 months of hire
• Excellent communication skills
• Ability to follow oral instructions
• Basic computer skills
• Strong work ethics and accountability
• Ability to lift 100 lbs to waist height

Preferred Qualifications

• Certification as a nursing assistant or military corpsman
• Patient care experience in an acute care setting
• Prior PCT experience

Physical Requirements

This position requires constant physical activity including hearing, reading, concentrating, and thinking analytically. Frequent physical activity includes standing, walking, talking, and using hands to touch, handle, or feel. Occasional physical activity includes sitting, bending, crawling, crouching, kneeling, stooping, reaching overhead, and tasting or smelling.

You must be able to lift and carry 100 lbs or more and push or pull 100 lbs or more. Work is performed inside a medical facility with moderate noise levels. Visual requirements include near and far visual acuity, color discrimination, depth perception, and peripheral vision.

You must be fitted for and capable of donning and performing routine tasks in personal protective equipment including N95 masks, Powered Air Purifying Respirators (PAPR), or Controlled Air Purifying Respirators (CAPR).

Work Environment

This position involves exposure to biological, chemical, electrical, and radiation hazards, as well as sharp objects and tools and dust.

Schedule and Training

This is a day shift position. All new Patient Care Technicians are required to complete 5 weeks of training Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM after being hired.
