Kern Medical is seeking a Patient Care Technician for a temporary position in our Medical-Surgical Telemetry unit. This is an extra-help role with a limited term of up to 9 months. You will provide direct and indirect patient care in an inpatient setting, working under the direction of licensed nursing and medical staff to support patient observation, comfort, safety, and personal care needs.
Clinical Setting
Kern Medical is an acute care teaching center with 222 beds, offering advanced trauma care. You will work in a fast-paced inpatient environment supporting the medical-surgical telemetry unit.
Responsibilities
- Assist with patient observation and care; check and record vital signs and pain levels
- Collect specimens and measure and record intake and output of food and fluids
- Pass and observe food trays; assist or feed patients as needed
- Assist patients with personal hygiene and grooming
- Answer call signals, make beds, and clean and care for equipment
- Adhere to isolation precautions, medical asepsis, infection control practices, and oxygen precautions
- Transport patients for admission, discharge, and procedures; transport specimens to the lab
- Perform general clerical duties and operate office equipment
- Assist with admitting, transferring, and discharging patients by inputting data into the Electronic Medical Record
- Schedule appointments and follow up on authorizations
- Answer telephones and provide basic information to patients and other interested parties
- Coordinate delivery of equipment and other services for patients following discharge
- Perform other job-related duties as required
Required Qualifications
- Successful completion of a State of California Department of Health Services approved Nursing Assistant training program, OR
- One year of an education program leading to an Associate's Degree or Baccalaureate degree in Nursing, OR
- Two years of experience as a Nursing Attendant in an acute care facility or in a skilled nursing facility for psychiatric patients
- Knowledge of basic nursing care and techniques, medical terminology, and metric measurement
- Ability to perform basic nursing care, read and record medical terminology and metric measurement, maintain medical records, and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to maintain effective relations with medical staff and the public
- Physical ability to stand, bend, squat, kneel, push, and pull throughout the majority of the work day
- Ability to frequently lift, carry, partially carry, or fully support patients while transferring to and from a bed, wheelchair, or gurney, or while walking
Licenses and Certifications
- American Heart Association Provider Basic Life Support (BLS) card required at time of hire, or successful completion of appropriate training and RQI Provider certification within 60 days of employment. Continued employment requires maintaining RQI Provider certification and competency.
- Depending on assignment, incumbents may be required to possess and maintain specific certificates of competency, which may include Basic Dysrhythmia certification
- All health requirements designated by Kern Medical Center must be maintained
Schedule
- Shift Differential Pay: P.M. shift (7:00 PM - 7:30 AM) receives 10% of base pay
Compensation and Benefits
- Estimated pay: $21.42 to $28.79 per hour
- This reflects only a portion of the total compensation package. Additional compensation may be available through differentials, incentives, and bonuses.

- All Kern Medical employees are designated Disaster Service Workers and may be required to remain at work or report to work in the event of a disaster or civil disorder
- If position responsibilities require driving a personal vehicle, a current valid California Driver's License and adherence to the Kern County Hospital Authority Vehicle Use and Driving Standard Policy is required
- If position responsibilities require driving a vehicle owned, leased, or rented by Kern Medical, a current valid California Driver's License, signed authorization for Release of Drivers Record Information, and adherence to the Kern County Hospital Authority Vehicle Use and Driving Standard Policy is required
