UMass Memorial Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician II for the Inpatient North Pavilion 4/5 unit. This is a 32-hour per week position working day shifts (7am-3pm), Monday through Friday with every other weekend and holiday off. As a Patient Care Technician II, you will work under the direction of licensed clinicians to provide direct patient care, assist with clinical procedures, and support the nursing team in delivering exceptional care to hospitalized patients.
Clinical Setting
This position is located in the North Pavilion 4/5 inpatient unit at UMass Memorial Health, a premier health system in Central Massachusetts. You will work in a fast-paced hospital environment providing care to a diverse patient population.
Responsibilities
- Provide clear, timely communication to the RN regarding patient observations and changes, including skin condition, vital signs, and mental status
- Provide constant observation of high-risk patients as assigned
- Participate in maintaining a safe environment, utilizing de-escalation interventions and assisting with patient restraints as trained and directed
- Assist patients with daily living activities including personal hygiene, ambulation, meals, and nourishment
- Assist with moving, lifting, positioning, and transporting patients using proper safety techniques and body mechanics
- Maintain patient safety through safety checks, fall prevention strategies, and adherence to restraint policies
- Take and record vital signs including temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, and pulse oximetry; measure and record height and weight
- Perform EKGs, Point of Care (POC) tests, and bladder scanning according to hospital standards
- Collect, label, and prepare specimens for transport to the lab
- Perform phlebotomy in certain locations
- Perform unit-specific procedures such as telemetry battery changes, equipment checks, cleaning equipment between patients, and supply storage
- Assist RNs and Licensed Independent Practitioners with treatments and procedures by preparing patients, obtaining and setting up equipment and supplies, utilizing sterile technique when indicated, positioning patients, providing emotional support, and cleaning up after procedures
- Observe, measure, and record oral food and fluid intake; set up and refill tube feeding solutions as directed
- Empty and record output from Foley catheters, ostomy appliances, and drainage systems as approved
- Perform ostomy care on established ostomate patients as directed
- Demonstrate sensitivity and responsiveness to patient needs by building positive rapport and relationships
- Provide respectful, culturally and age-appropriate communication with patients, staff, family, and visitors
- Replenish patient and unit supplies and equipment
- Request assistance from identified resources when additional direction is needed
- Stay current with hospital and unit changes by reading communications, bulletin boards, and responding to emails
- Precept new Patient Care Technicians
- Comply with departmental policies, procedures, and objectives
- Attend required meetings, conferences, and seminars
- Demonstrate quality improvement in daily operations
- Comply with all health and safety regulations
- Maintain regular, reliable, and predictable attendance
- Perform other similar and related duties as required or directed
Required Qualifications
- Minimum high school education or GED
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Demonstrated competency at the Patient Care Technician I level with a minimum of 800 hours and at least 6 months of experience as a PCT I, OR 6 months of prior inpatient/outpatient direct patient care experience
- Ability to read, write, and communicate in English in a clear and concise manner
- Medical terminology knowledge
- Computer skills
- Strong interpersonal skills to gather information, build relationships, and provide exceptional service
- Proven problem-solving abilities for routine situations
- Ability to remain calm when under stress or in emergency situations
Physical Demands
- Work indoors in a patient care environment
- Hand dexterity, hearing, and vision to take direction, adjust equipment, and observe and describe patient observations
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Heavy demand work requiring standing and walking most of the time
- Possibility of pushing heavy equipment and bending frequently
Schedule and Compensation
- 32 hours per week
- 7am-3pm day shift, Monday through Friday
- Every other weekend off
- Every other holiday off
- Hiring range: $19.74 - $26.96 per hour (based on a full-time 40-hour schedule)
- Final offer will vary based on scheduled hours, experience, skills, qualifications, and internal equity considerations
- Compensation for part-time or reduced schedules will be prorated based on scheduled weekly hours
- Signing bonus may be available; eligibility will be confirmed during the interview process
