The opportunity

Job Description

GBMC HealthCare is seeking a Patient Care Technician I to support the nursing team on Unit 52, a medical/telemetry/stroke/neuro unit. Working the 7 p.m. to 7:30 a.m. shift, you will provide direct and indirect patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse or Licensed Practical Nurse. This role offers the opportunity to develop clinical skills while collaborating with unit leadership to support excellent patient experiences.

Clinical Setting

Unit 52 is a medical/telemetry/stroke/neuro unit. You will work the night shift, 7 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.

Responsibilities

Patient Care

  • Provide care, comfort, and safety for assigned patients under direct supervision of a nurse
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living, including bathing, toileting, oral hygiene, and changing bed linens
  • Use proper infection control techniques to protect patients and yourself
  • Assist with delegated nursing procedures as directed
  • Observe patients and report reactions or changes in condition to nursing personnel
  • Complete close observation documentation
  • Distribute patient trays and nourishments, fill water pitchers, and assist with feeding as needed
  • Maintain clean and orderly patient rooms, including disposing of soiled linens, stocking supplies, and cleaning surfaces
  • Assist with patient admissions, transfers, and discharges, including transportation and securing valuables
  • Escort patients as needed while adhering to safety precautions
  • Perform routine vital signs, intake and output measurements, weights, and finger sticks for blood glucose
  • Use pulse oximetry equipment and perform point-of-care testing
  • Obtain lab specimens such as urine collections, sputum cultures, and heel sticks
  • Set up oxygen therapy
  • Reinforce use of incentive spirometry and provide pillow splinting as needed
  • Conduct bladder scans as directed
  • Perform oral suctioning as directed
  • Operate an EKG machine as directed by the nurse
  • Discontinue IV lines and saline locks as directed by the nurse
  • Perform simple dressing changes as directed by the nurse
  • Insert, remove, and empty Foley catheters as directed by the nurse
  • Empty and record other drains as directed by the nurse
  • Utilize electronic medical records for appropriate record keeping
  • Clean and stock supply shelves
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Professional Development

  • Precept new staff as directed
  • Coach and mentor staff members
  • Assist with creating Nursing Support patient assignments
  • Prepare agenda and facilitate unit-based meetings
  • Provide feedback for peer evaluations
  • Participate in interviewing new staff as needed
  • Assist with creating and balancing Nursing Support schedules

Quality and Safety

  • Participate in performance improvement and Lean Management System activities
  • Participate in adverse event analyses and root cause analyses as directed
  • Participate in audits as directed
  • Perform quality controls for EKG transmission and glucometers

Leadership

  • Collaborate with charge nurse on planning daily unit activities
  • Assist with leading shift huddles with Nursing Support
  • Participate in departmental or organizational committees and communicate information
  • Collect unit feedback for improving teamwork
  • Demonstrate active problem solving
  • Demonstrate appropriate use of chain of command

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current registration with State of Maryland Board of Nursing Examiners as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) I or CNA II
  • Heart Saver CPR certification
  • Ability to read and write English to provide basic patient care and understand detailed instructions
  • Ability to perform simple mathematical calculations for recording weights, vital signs, and routine patient information
  • Interpersonal skills to interact courteously with patients, visitors, physicians, and staff
  • Strong communication skills
  • Basic computer skills
  • Competence in safely handling medications
  • Ability to concentrate and pay attention to detail when performing patient care tasks
  • Ability to walk and stand up to 90 percent of work time
  • Ability to lift and position patients

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 6 months of experience in direct patient care

Compensation

Pay range: $15.00 to $22.00 per hour. Final salary offer will be based on candidate qualifications, education, experience, and alignment with organizational needs.
