The opportunity

Job Description

UTMB Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician I (PCT) to provide basic technical assistance and supportive patient care on the day shift. In this role, you will work as a sitter in the GMC unit, supporting patients throughout assigned areas and assisting the nursing team in delivering quality patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, report, and document vital signs, height and weight, intake and output, and pulse oximetry
  • Collect specimens and obtain blood samples by venipuncture
  • Acquire 12-lead EKGs and perform point-of-care testing (POCT)
  • Assist with patient activities and care as assigned by the charge nurse or designee
  • Provide personal hygiene assistance including bathing, oral suctioning, superficial and chronic wound care, skincare for patients with TED hose, sequential compression devices (SCD), casts, and skeletal pins
  • Assist with patient elimination, care for incontinent patients, manage urinary catheters, administer cleansing enemas and sitz baths, and provide ostomy care
  • Assist with feeding and nutrition support
  • Ambulate, position, and turn patients; provide care for patients with altered mobility
  • Assist with patient safety measures appropriate to age and condition
  • Assist with patient restraints and patient-specific safety precautions
  • Collect, report, and document data related to patient needs, emergencies, and unusual patient or family behavior
  • Provide care for patients from correctional environments
  • Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality at all times
  • Maintain clean, safe patient care environments and assist with aseptic technique, isolation procedures, and infection control measures
  • Maintain appropriate supplies in patient care areas
  • Assist with patient requests for other hospital services
  • Perform video monitoring duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

  • Completion of one of the following: recognized Nurse Assistant program, Medical Assistant program, Medical Corpsman program, EMT program, or UTMB Hospital Aide Training Program; OR two years of experience in a direct patient care environment; OR current certification as MA, PCT, or CNA; OR enrollment in a recognized School of Nursing with completion of the first semester containing clinical concepts and health assessment or equivalent
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
