Job Description

UPMC Altoona is hiring a part-time Patient Care Technician I to support the T11 Trauma unit on day and evening shifts. This is a 20-hour-per-week union position (AFSCME) with rotation, holidays, and weekends.

Clinical Setting

T11 Trauma is a 44-bed orthopedic, trauma, neurological, and medical-surgical monitored unit serving the adult population. The unit specializes in orthopedic surgeries, neurological surgeries, fractures, trauma, neurological disorders, and medical cases. You will work alongside nurses, nursing assistants, physical therapists, physicians, and case management to provide exceptional patient care.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care including activities of daily living such as bathing, feeding, transporting, toileting, and ambulating patients
  • Perform routine tests including blood glucose monitoring, patient weights, vital signs, and intake and output measurements
  • Respond to call lights and telephones, pass meal trays, and transport patients
  • Maintain a clean and organized patient care environment, including completing safety checks, changing bed linens, emptying linen hampers, and keeping hallways clear
  • Acquire and distribute supplies and equipment to facilitate patient care delivery
  • Provide companionship and one-on-one supervision with patients as required
  • Deliver patient nourishments, fill water pitchers, and distribute patient mail
  • Document in the medical record according to established procedures
  • Report changes in patient status and provide feedback to the RN regarding patient care
  • Comply with all safety policies and procedures including standard precautions and bloodborne pathogen exposure protocols
  • Report equipment malfunctions to the appropriate department
  • Establish professional and respectful interpersonal relationships
  • Assume responsibility for assignments and view problems as challenges
  • Constructively receive feedback and direction
  • Suggest and support changes within the department
  • Identify and communicate learning needs to the unit director

Advanced Skills

Based on department operational need, you may achieve and maintain competency in one or more of the following: phlebotomy/venipuncture, peripheral IV removal, indwelling Foley catheter removal, basic arrhythmia, 12-lead EKG, and NG tube clamping and removal.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • If no previous hospital or pre-hospital training: successful completion of UPMC patient care technician class OR successful completion of the first year of clinical work in a nursing program
  • Successful completion of basic information system training
  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification
  • CPR required based on AHA standards (didactic and skills demonstration) within 30 days of hire
  • Act 34 clearance

Preferred Qualifications

  • Microcomputer experience

Schedule

  • Part-time: 20 hours per week
  • Day and evening shifts with rotation, holidays, and weekends
