The opportunity

Job Description

Join Canonsburg Hospital's 2 West Medical Surgical/Telemetry Unit as a Patient Care Technician I. This 40-bed unit provides comprehensive care for diverse patient populations, specializing in cardiac, pulmonary, infectious disease, neurology, GI, surgical, orthopedic, and observation patients. You will work 12-hour shifts as part of a collaborative team alongside RNs, LPNs, PCTs, Cardiac Monitor Technicians, and Unit Secretaries, all committed to delivering exceptional patient care.

Responsibilities

You will provide direct patient care and assist with non-direct patient care unit coordination. Your clinical responsibilities include:

  • Perform basic nursing procedures for patients in stable condition, including activities of daily living assistance
  • Obtain vital signs, perform specimen collection, phlebotomy, intake and output monitoring, height and weight measurements
  • Conduct 12-lead EKG testing, blood glucose testing and monitoring, point-of-care testing, and bladder scanning
  • Perform clean catheterization, straight catheterizations, and removal of indwelling urinary catheters per hospital protocol
  • Collect urine specimens from Foley catheters
  • Insert and remove IV access with documentation
  • Perform simple and dry dressing changes
  • Encourage and observe patients on incentive spirometer and cough and deep breathing exercises
  • Conduct skin surveys and early mobility/ambulation protocols
  • Assist with patient exams, treatments, and procedures
  • Assist in cardiac monitoring and transport of low-level monitoring patients
  • Transport patients and their medical records
  • Document oxygen administration

You will also participate in quality and patient satisfaction initiatives, including bedside shift reports, purposeful hourly rounding to promote safety such as falls prevention and hand washing, isolation protocols, and maintaining a clean and orderly environment. You may precept newly hired PCTs.

Additional responsibilities include accurately documenting vital signs, weights, intake and output, restraints, specimen collection, EKG completion, and all other treatments. You will report changes in patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions, as well as any issues or concerns to nursing staff. You will participate in unit activities such as supply stocking and equipment/appliance cleaning, checks, and retrieval.

You will work under the general supervision of the Registered Nurse for patients in stable condition and under direct supervision of the RN for acutely ill and complex patients. You will receive specific work assignments from the Charge Nurse and/or Care Team Leader and are expected to demonstrate efficient time management by completing work within scheduled time.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED
  • Ability to perform basic mathematics
  • Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions
  • Basic computer skills
  • CPR certification from American Heart Association
  • Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance Certificate
  • Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance Certificate
  • Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Criminal Background Clearance Certificate

Experience

Limited or no experience is acceptable. Candidates with limited or no experience must be able to attend 2 weeks of training.

This is a part-time position requiring 12-hour shifts.
