Patient Care Technician I - Cardiac/PCU

Join Bryan Health's Cardiac Unit as a Patient Care Technician I, where you will serve as a vital member of the patient care team providing direct patient care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. This role combines the core functions of a certified nursing assistant with additional duties tailored to the cardiac and progressive care unit environment. You will work with patients experiencing acute, chronic, and complex cardiac conditions, contributing to their comfort, safety, and recovery.

Clinical Setting

You will be assigned to the 4E/4N-Cardiac Unit at Bryan Health, working in a fast-paced hospital environment with changing patient needs and diverse patient populations.

Responsibilities

• Commit to the organization's mission, vision, and core values in all patient interactions
• Recognize and respond appropriately to emergency procedures according to role, policies, and procedures
• Answer telephones and communication devices, relaying information as necessary and referring all physician telephone orders to licensed professionals
• Assist in collecting patient information and contribute to admission, transfer, and discharge processes as delegated by the RN, with timely reporting and recording in the Electronic Medical Record (EMR)
• Provide patient care consistent with standards of care and clinical priorities determined by the RN, considering unit policies, demonstrated competencies, risk management, and infection control practices
• Perform and document routine direct nursing care tasks according to age-specific needs
• Obtain and record vital signs, height, weight, and bedside glucose results; report results to appropriate personnel
• Perform Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) for assigned patients and document in the EMR
• Label and secure patient belongings and ensure patient rooms are safe and uncluttered
• Distribute patient meals and water; assist with feeding as needed
• Assist with patient ambulation, lifting, and positioning using appropriate patient lift devices and proper body mechanics
• Transport patients, including during transfers and discharges
• Assist patients with elimination needs and measure and record bodily elimination in the medical record
• Bathe patients as directed by the RN
• Participate as a team member in hourly patient rounds to proactively address patient needs
• Provide close observation or one-to-one care as directed by the RN to prevent patient wandering or injury
• Collect, accurately label, and transport specimens to the lab as required
• Assist with dressing changes, applying splints, setting up suturing and procedures, and wound care on closed wounds as directed by the RN
• Clean, stock, and care for supplies and equipment in the assigned work area
• Perform other related projects and duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

• Active Nebraska Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) credential
• Basic Life Support (CPR) certification (American Heart Association for healthcare professionals, American Red Cross for healthcare professionals, or Military Training Network certifications accepted)
• Knowledge of general hospital processes and procedures
• Knowledge of computer equipment and software applications relevant to work functions
• Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing patient needs, including work with patients with acute, chronic, and complex disease processes, and those who are dying
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with healthcare team members and diverse populations
• Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient information
• Ability to practice proper body mechanics to ensure personal and patient safety
• Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision
• Ability to maintain regular and punctual attendance
• Maintain clinical competency as required for the unit of assignment, including population-specific competencies, and participate in annual skill competency verification

Preferred Qualifications

• Six months of CNA experience

Education

• Active Nebraska Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) credential required

Licenses and Certifications

• Active Nebraska CNA credential required
• Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required
• Note: If assigned to the Emergency Department, an EMT certification may be accepted in place of CNA

Schedule

• Limited part-time position
• Evening shift: 1500-2300 (3:00 PM - 11:00 PM)
• 2 eight-hour shifts per week
• Every other weekend

Physical Requirements

This position is characterized as medium work requiring exertion of 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
