Patient Care Technician

This full-time Patient Care Technician position supports clinical operations in a fast-paced Emergency Department setting in Penn Yan, New York. You will work under the supervision of Registered Nurses to provide direct patient care, perform technical procedures, and manage clerical functions for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients. This is a 13-week contract position with the option to extend, working three 12-hour shifts per week.

Clinical Setting

You will work in an Emergency Department providing care to patients across the lifespan. The role involves occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens, including potential contact with blood, body fluids, and tissues.

Responsibilities

• Perform phlebotomy, EKGs, patient transport, hygiene care, vital signs, weights, and pulse oximetry
• Assist with procedures, wound care, splinting, and sterile dressing setup under RN or MD supervision
• Input radiology, laboratory, and EKG orders accurately and promptly into Meditech
• Accurately enter patient orders, discharges, transfers, and related information into Meditech
• Maintain departmental filing systems, manage mail, and ensure organized record-keeping
• Monitor and order supplies, restock rooms, and maintain cleanliness and organization of utility areas
• Answer phones, convey messages, and assist visitors courteously
• Keep patients and families informed about care processes and support patient needs throughout their emergency visit
• Monitor and report changes in patient condition promptly to nursing staff
• Ensure safe patient handling and mobility, including use of transfer devices and fall prevention measures
• Follow infection prevention and isolation protocols rigorously
• Support de-escalation and behavioral emergency interventions
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary team members to ensure efficient patient flow and continuity of care
• Accurately document patient care and observations in the medical record according to policy
• Maintain equipment by cleaning, testing, and reporting malfunctions promptly
• Participate in unit and organizational improvement activities

Required Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED
• Current BLS certification (provided during first week of hire)
• One year of acute care experience in a hospital setting
• Computer literacy required

Licenses and Certifications

• BLS certification through AHA or RQI (provided during first week of hire)
• CPI certification required within 30 days of hire

Preferred Qualifications

• Post-secondary education in a related field
• Medical Terminology coursework
• Experience in phlebotomy, EKG, emergency department, or Medical Terminology
• Experience with Microsoft Office, Meditech, Excel, and spreadsheets

Schedule

Three 12-hour shifts per week.
