IU Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician (also known as a Patient Care Assistant or PCA) to provide compassionate bedside care on a medical observation unit. In this full-time night position, you will work three 12-hour shifts per week, anticipating patient needs and providing direct support to the nursing team.
As a bedside caregiver, you will assist patients with activities of daily living including providing drinks, assisting with meal ordering, encouraging mobility, assisting with baths, and providing clean linens and gowns. You will obtain vital signs, report abnormalities or changes in patient behavior to the primary RN or charge nurse, and help detect and support rapid treatment when needed. Patient safety is a core responsibility—you will utilize safety measures such as gait belts, bed and chair alarms, and maintain close proximity to patients during movement.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care and assistance with activities of daily living
- Obtain and report vital signs, noting abnormalities or behavioral changes
- Assist patients with mobility, bathing, and personal hygiene
- Maintain patient safety using appropriate safety equipment and techniques
- Support the bedside RN with clinical assistance
- Maintain clean patient environments with fresh linens and gowns
- Work effectively in a fast-paced hospital environment
Schedule
- Full-time nights: three 12-hour shifts per week
Required Qualifications
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA), or attainment upon completion of the IU Health PCA education program
- Knowledge of care appropriate to the age and developmental level of patients served
- Up-to-date knowledge of procedures and standards related to patient care activities
- Proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to maintain constant mental awareness and withstand high levels of tension and stress
- Ability to maintain concentration when subjected to frequent interruptions and variable noise levels
- Ability to exercise judgment and initiative in problem resolution
- Ability to set priorities and manage high workloads within limited timeframes
- Knowledge of procedures, equipment, software, and standards related to patient care activities performed by non-licensed roles
- Knowledge of infection control principles
- Ability to perform physically demanding and repetitious movements
- Ability to read and perform basic math
- Ability to organize tasks and attend to details
- Knowledge of personal hygiene and aseptic techniques to prevent infection
Certifications
- Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit or department specialty according to patient care policies
