IU Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician (also known as a Patient Care Assistant or PCA) to provide direct bedside care on the Medical Observation unit in Bloomington. As a Patient Care Technician, you will be the primary bedside caregiver, anticipating and responding to patient needs while working collaboratively with the nursing team to deliver exceptional patient experiences.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care including assisting with activities of daily living such as bathing, meal ordering, and providing clean linens and gowns
- Encourage patient mobility and assist with walking
- Obtain and report vital signs, identifying and communicating abnormalities or changes in patient behavior to the primary RN or charge nurse
- Maintain patient safety by utilizing appropriate safety measures including gait belts, bed and chair alarms, and maintaining close proximity during patient movement
- Provide clinical assistance to bedside nursing staff
- Respond to patient requests such as providing drinks and other comfort measures
Schedule
- Full-time position
- Three 12-hour night shifts per week
Required Qualifications
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association, or ability to obtain certification through the IU Health PCA education program
- Knowledge of age-appropriate and developmentally appropriate patient care
- Current knowledge of procedures and standards related to patient care activities
- Proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to maintain mental awareness and manage high levels of tension and stress
- Ability to maintain concentration despite frequent interruptions and variable noise levels
- Ability to exercise judgment and initiative in problem-solving
- Ability to prioritize tasks and manage high workloads within limited timeframes
- Knowledge of infection control principles
- Ability to perform physically demanding and repetitious movements
- Ability to read and perform basic mathematics
- Ability to organize tasks and attend to details
- Knowledge of personal hygiene principles and aseptic techniques to prevent infection
Advanced Certifications
- Other advanced life support certifications may be required based on unit or department specialty according to patient care policies
