IU Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician (also known as Patient Care Assistant or PCA) for the Emergency Department on a full-time night shift. In this bedside caregiver role, you will provide direct patient care in a fast-paced emergency setting, anticipating patient needs and supporting the nursing team in delivering excellent patient experiences.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care including assisting with drinks, meal ordering, bathing, and providing clean linens and gowns
- Encourage patient mobility and walking
- Obtain and report vital signs to the primary RN or charge nurse
- Report abnormalities or changes in patient behavior to detect and support rapid treatment
- Implement safety measures including use of gait belts, bed and chair alarms, and maintaining close proximity to patients during movement
- Provide clinical assistance to bedside RNs
- Maintain patient safety and comfort throughout shifts
Schedule
- Full-time nights: 7:00 PM - 7:30 AM
- Three 12-hour shifts per week
- Must be available for weekdays, every third weekend, and holiday rotations
Required Qualifications
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA), or ability to obtain certification through the IU Health PCA education program
- Knowledge of care appropriate to the age and developmental level of patients served
- Up-to-date knowledge of procedures and standards related to patient care activities
- Proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to maintain constant mental awareness and withstand high levels of tension and stress
- Ability to maintain concentration when subjected to frequent interruptions and variable noise levels
- Ability to exercise judgment and initiative in problem resolution
- Ability to set priorities and manage high workloads within limited timeframes
- Knowledge of procedures, equipment, software, and standards related to patient care activities performed by non-licensed roles
- Knowledge of infection control principles
- Ability to perform physically demanding and repetitious movements
- Ability to read and perform basic math
- Ability to organize tasks and attend to details
- Knowledge of personal hygiene and aseptic techniques to prevent infection
Certifications
- Other advanced life support certifications may be required based on unit or department specialty according to patient care policies
