IU Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician (also known as a Patient Care Assistant or PCA) for the Emergency Department on a full-time night shift basis. In this bedside caregiver role, you will provide direct patient care and clinical assistance to support the nursing team in a fast-paced emergency environment.
Responsibilities
- Provide direct patient care including assisting with activities of daily living such as bathing, meal ordering, and providing clean linens and gowns
- Encourage patient mobility and assist with walking
- Obtain and record vital signs, reporting abnormalities or changes in patient behavior to the primary RN or charge nurse
- Anticipate patient needs such as providing drinks and other comfort measures
- Maintain patient safety by utilizing safety measures including gait belts, bed and chair alarms, and maintaining close proximity to patients during movement
- Support the nursing team in delivering a positive patient experience
Schedule
- Full-time position requiring 3 full 12-hour shifts per week
- Night shift hours: 7:00 PM - 7:30 AM
- Must be able to work weekdays as well as every third weekend and holiday rotation
Required Qualifications
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA), or ability to obtain certification through the IU Health PCA education program
- Knowledge of care appropriate to the age and developmental level of patients served
- Up-to-date knowledge of procedures and standards related to patient care activities
- Proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to maintain constant mental awareness and withstand high levels of tension and stress
- Ability to maintain concentration when subjected to frequent and varied interruptions and variable noise levels
- Ability to exercise judgment and initiative in problem resolution
- Ability to set priorities and manage high workload within limited timeframes
- Knowledge of procedures, equipment, software, and standards related to patient care activities performed by non-licensed roles
- Knowledge of infection control principles
- Ability to perform physically demanding and repetitious movements
- Ability to read and perform basic math
- Ability to organize tasks and attend to details
- Knowledge of personal hygiene principles and aseptic techniques to prevent infection
Certifications
- Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies
