IU Health is seeking a Patient Care Technician (also known as a Patient Care Assistant or PCA) for a full-time night position on the Adult Cardiothoracic Surgical Unit at Methodist. As a bedside caregiver, you will provide direct patient care and support the nursing team in delivering a high-quality patient experience.
Clinical Setting
You will work on an adult cardiothoracic surgical unit, providing care to post-operative and acute cardiothoracic patients under the direction of registered nurses.
Responsibilities
- Provide activities of daily living assistance, including helping with meals, drinks, bathing, and providing clean linens and gowns
- Assist patients with mobility and ambulation using appropriate safety measures
- Obtain and report vital signs, reporting any abnormalities or changes in patient behavior to the primary RN or charge nurse
- Maintain continuous observation of patients, including suicide prevention monitoring
- Ensure patient safety by utilizing safety measures such as gait belts, bed and chair alarms, and maintaining close proximity during patient movement
- Keep patient surroundings clean and orderly
- Support the interdisciplinary patient care team
Required Qualifications
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Heart Association (AHA), or attainment at completion of the IU Health PCA education program
- Knowledge of care appropriate to the age and developmental level of patients served
- Up-to-date knowledge of procedures and standards related to patient care activities
- Proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills
- Ability to maintain constant mental awareness and withstand high levels of tension and stress
- Ability to maintain concentration when subjected to frequent interruptions and variable noise levels
- Ability to exercise judgment and initiative in problem resolution
- Ability to set priorities and manage high workloads within limited timeframes
- Knowledge of infection control principles
- Ability to perform physically demanding and repetitious movements
- Ability to read and perform basic math
- Ability to organize tasks and attend to details
- Knowledge of personal hygiene and aseptic techniques to prevent infection
Additional Requirements
- Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit specialty according to patient care policies
