Job Description

Join Carilion Clinic as a Patient Care Technician - Early Mobility in a full-time day shift role at our Roanoke facility. As a Patient Care Technician, you will provide essential nursing care and support to patients of all ages. You will monitor vital signs including blood pressure, oxygen levels, and temperature, and assist patients with activities of daily living such as bathing, meals, toileting, and ambulation. This role may include one-on-one care of patients on suicide or safety precautions. You will work as part of a collaborative healthcare team, performing basic clerical and technical clinical services focused on patient care, cleanliness, safety, and comfort.

Responsibilities

  • Provide basic nursing care and perform advanced technical skills as appropriate for specified age groups
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living and document patient observations for licensed staff
  • Transport patients, supplies, specimens, and equipment within the facility
  • Demonstrate competent knowledge of the electronic medical record (EMR) and assist with chart audits
  • Participate in unit quality surveillance activities and performance improvement initiatives
  • Lead unit huddles and participate in interdepartmental patient rounds
  • Support department scheduling and cover lunch assignments as needed
  • Review medical records for outstanding orders and notify nurses of stat orders and medication changes
  • Order and stock department supplies and equipment; maintain and operate general office equipment
  • Lead streamlined admission, transfer, and discharge processes with focus on patient experience
  • Welcome and assist patients and visitors; serve as the face of the unit and model service excellence
  • Answer phones with excellent telephone etiquette; screen and route calls appropriately
  • Monitor cleanliness of waiting and break rooms; perform safety and environmental rounds
  • Participate in the sitter process when competencies are appropriate
  • Assist with maintaining regulatory compliance including refrigerator checks, glucose meter maintenance, equipment room storage, and code cart checks
  • May perform phlebotomy, nonsterile wound care dressings, saline lock replacement and removal, and colostomy bag changes as competency appropriate

Clinical Setting

You will work in a patient care environment that is often fast-paced, requiring prioritization and time management skills. You may be required to support multiple nursing units and will interact with unit staff, patients, physicians, families, visitors, management, ancillary departments, and the general public. You must maintain patient, staff, and customer confidentiality.

Physical Demands

This role requires the ability to perform responsibilities in a fast-paced environment. Physical requirements include lifting, prolonged periods of standing, bending, pushing, pulling, reaching, and walking. You may be exposed to infectious diseases, biohazardous and hazardous materials, including regulated medical wastes, and combative patients. Prolonged periods of sitting, visualizing a computer screen, and using a keyboard may be necessary.

Schedule

  • Full-time position
  • Day shift
  • Every other weekend
  • Rotating holidays
  • Mandatory orientation classes during daytime hours, Monday through Friday, 8 am to 5 pm for the first 2 weeks

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent education
  • Effective interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills
  • Must successfully complete orientation and competency validation for the position
  • AHA BLS-HCP certification required within 6 months of hire

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous experience in direct patient care
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification (required if assigned to a critical access facility)

Compensation and Benefits

  • Compensation range: $17.39 - $24.35 per hour (based on qualifications, credentials, education, and prior work experience)

Additional Information

You must be able to attend required orientation classes during daytime hours, Monday through Friday, from 8 am to 5 pm for the first 2 weeks. These classes are mandatory. You may be required to work at multiple Carilion facilities.
