The opportunity

Job Description

Join Northwestern Medicine as a Patient Care Technician in our Cardiac Telemetry unit. In this full-time day position, you will work under the supervision of registered nurses to provide essential patient care activities and support to patients in a cardiac monitoring environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic nursing care activities as delegated and supervised by an RN, including monitoring vital signs, taking blood glucose measurements, and recording intake and output
  • Assist patients with personal care and activities of daily living, including bathing, grooming, and eating
  • Report abnormal findings or changes in physical, mental, and emotional conditions to nursing staff
  • Assist with keeping patient rooms clean and orderly
  • Answer telephone, intercom, and call lights in a polite manner using appropriate telephone etiquette and communicate information to appropriate staff, family, and patients
  • Manage overall unit workflow in concert with the charge RN and/or assistant manager as needed
  • Perform pre-census and validate daily admission, discharge, and census lists as needed
  • Serve as liaison between patient care units and all other patient-related departments
  • Demonstrate flexibility, organization, and multi-tasking abilities while functioning effectively under stressful situations
  • Utilize critical thinking skills to prioritize and complete unit work quickly as unit needs, patient needs, and staff needs change

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Certified Medical Assistant (CMA), Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), or current nursing school student with at least one semester of clinical completed
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification

Preferred Qualifications

  • Phlebotomy experience
  • Graduate of an accredited Nursing Assistant program
  • Graduate of a Phlebotomy course

  • Background check required, including criminal history review. Results are evaluated on a case-by-case basis in accordance with local, state, and federal laws, including the Illinois Health Care Worker Background Check Act.
