Job Description

Sentara Norfolk General Hospital is hiring a Patient Care Technician (PCT) for the Cardiac Procedural and Surgical Unit, a 24-bed high-acuity cardiac care unit. This full-time, day shift position provides essential patient care support for pre- and post-cardiac surgery patients, including those recovering from bypass surgery, cardiac valve repairs and replacements, and other cardiac procedures such as ICD and permanent pacemaker placements. You will also care for patients with cardiac arrhythmias, heart failure, and chest pain.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care and support for independent and dependent activities of daily living
  • Monitor and record vital signs
  • Assist with patient mobility and ambulation
  • Perform phlebotomy and point-of-care testing
  • Conduct EKG testing
  • Remove peripheral IV lines
  • Collect specimens
  • Insert and remove foley catheters
  • Observe patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions
  • Document observations in a timely and accurate manner
  • Report any changes in patient condition to the nurse or medical staff
  • Comply with patient safety practices under the direction of the professional RN nurse

Clinical Setting

This position is located at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, a 525-bed tertiary care facility in Norfolk, VA. The hospital is home to the only Level I Adult Trauma Center and burn trauma unit in Hampton Roads and serves as the primary teaching hospital for Eastern Virginia Medical School. The facility is a recognized accredited Comprehensive Stroke Center and Magnet hospital for nursing excellence, with specializations in heart and vascular care, neurosciences, neurosurgery, urology, oncology, spine care, advanced imaging, behavioral health, maternity, and women's health.

Schedule

  • Full-time position
  • Day shift (7 AM to 7 PM)
  • Three 12-hour shifts per week (36 hours per week)
  • Rotating weekends and holidays

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • One of the following:
  • Sentara Care Partner Certification Program completion
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification
  • National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) certification
  • National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT) certification
  • Completion of US Navy Hospital Corps School
  • Emergency Services certification (EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic)
  • Current enrollment in a clinical program beyond prerequisites with at least one semester completed in a Registered Nurse (RN), Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Respiratory Therapist (RT), or Physical Therapist (PT) program
  • Current work experience within the last three years as a Patient Care Technician (PCT) or Nursing Assistant
  • AHA Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required within 90 days of hire

  • One year of healthcare experience

Compensation

The base pay range for full-time employment is $18.93 to $27.41 hourly. Additional compensation may be available, including shift differentials, on-call pay, overtime, shift premiums, extra-shift incentives, or bonus opportunities. Compensation within the range may vary based on qualifications, experience, location, market conditions, and business needs. Colleagues have the opportunity to earn an annual discretionary bonus if established system and employee eligibility criteria are met.
