Patient Care Technician Cardiac Heart Failure

Baystate Medical Center is seeking a Patient Care Technician for the MassMutual 7 Cardiac Heart Failure Inpatient Unit, a 32-bed unit specializing in the care of patients with congestive heart failure and those undergoing cardiac procedures. This is a 36-hour per week position working night shifts with every other weekend and holiday required.

The Heart Failure Unit provides comprehensive services for advanced heart failure patients, including medical management, pre- and post-care for cardiac catheterization, ablation, pacemaker placement, cardioversion, and transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). The unit utilizes CardioMEMS technology to reduce hospitalizations and improve quality of life for heart failure patients.

Responsibilities

As a Patient Care Technician, you will work under the coordination of the Registered Nurse and perform a variety of technical and bedside functions, including:

• Provide direct patient care including hygiene, skin care, mobility assistance, and monitoring
• Monitor basic physiological parameters and take routine vital signs within specified timeframes
• Obtain and document weights, heights, abdominal girths, and other measurements as ordered
• Report significant deviations in vital signs and changes in patient condition immediately
• Perform phlebotomy and EKGs as needed on the unit
• Change dressings within one hour of the specified timeframe per established procedure
• Assist patients with elimination of body wastes and provide bedpans, urinals, and emesis basins as requested
• Accurately label and send specimens of urine, feces, and sputum within 30 minutes
• Measure and record intake and output per established policy
• Administer enemas or Harris Drips as ordered
• Perform Point of Care (POC) testing
• Assist with treatment delivery and monitor patient condition during treatment
• Provide information to the RN based on patient observations
• Assist physicians with exams and simple procedures
• Verify patient identity by checking identification bracelet before performing any procedure
• Manage equipment and perform or assist in all procedures on the unit
• Communicate effectively with the team and patients in a respectful and informative manner
• Recognize culturally based patient and family needs
• Respond effectively in emergency situations and maintain patient safety at all times
• Function as a member of the healthcare team and assist team members with clinical and non-clinical activities
• Perform other similar and related duties as assigned

Schedule

• 36 hours per week
• Night shift
• Every other weekend and holiday required

Required Qualifications

This position is part of a career ladder with hiring level determined by recruitment experience.

Level I:

• PCT training or CNA training preferred
• BLS CPR Certification through American Heart Association required

Level II:

• High School diploma or GED
• At least one year of patient care experience (may vary in level of long-term care, specialty, acute care, etc.)
• BLS CPR Certification through American Heart Association required

Level III:

• High School diploma or GED
• Three or more years of patient care experience (may vary in level of long-term care, specialty, acute care, etc.) OR at least one year as a Level II PCT at Baystate Health
• BLS CPR Certification through American Heart Association required

Level IV:

• High School diploma or GED
• Four or more years of acute or specialty-specific care setting experience OR at least one year as a Level III PCT at Baystate Health
• BLS CPR Certification through American Heart Association required

Skills and Competencies

• Proficient in reading and writing in English
• Able to maintain professional composure in medium to high-stress situations
• Effective communication skills

Compensation and Benefits

Base Pay Range: $17.01 - $21.57 - $28.08 per hour
