Patient Care Technician - Cardiac Care Unit - Nights

Swedish Hospital in Chicago is seeking a Patient Care Technician for the Cardiac Care Unit (CCU) to provide direct patient care support on the night shift. In this role, you will work under the direction of a Clinical Nurse Manager to assist patients with activities of daily living, vital sign monitoring, and admission procedures in a critical care environment.

Clinical Setting

You will work in the Cardiac Care Unit at Swedish Hospital, a Magnet-recognized acute care facility. The CCU serves patients requiring cardiac monitoring and specialized care. You may float to other inpatient units as needed.

Responsibilities

• Provide direct patient care including assistance with hygiene, elimination needs, nutrition, ambulation, and range of motion exercises
• Assist with patient admissions by setting up rooms with ECG cables, leads, SpO2 cables, and disposable blood pressure cuffs; attaching monitoring equipment; and taking initial vital signs
• Perform and document vital sign monitoring including temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, and blood pressure
• Perform point-of-care blood glucose monitoring (Accu-Check) and document results in the electronic medical record
• Perform 12-lead ECGs as directed by the RN
• Perform daily Accu-Check quality controls at midnight
• Reposition and round on assigned patients every two hours
• Implement fall precautions and high-risk precautions based on patient need and RN direction
• Empty, measure, and record output from Foley bags and colostomy bags as directed
• Properly clean and disinfect multi-use equipment between patient care
• Gather required linens before bathing or cleaning patients
• Maintain patient privacy and confidentiality
• Communicate effectively with patients, families, visitors, and healthcare team members
• Use standard precautions and special precautions as ordered, including appropriate personal protective equipment
• Follow safe patient handling guidelines and demonstrate proper use of lifting and patient safety equipment
• Follow all policies and procedures related to patient and staff safety
• Proactively organize and stock the nursing unit with patient care supplies
• Empty trash from patient rooms, nursing station, hallway, medication room, and storage room at the end of shift
• Provide handoff report to the oncoming PCT before leaving at the end of shift
• Check vital signs on all patients at the end of shift if no PCT is scheduled for the next shift
• Maintain clinical competency as tested annually by Nursing Education

Schedule

• Full-time position (36 hours per week)
• Night shift: 7:00 PM to 7:30 AM
• Every other weekend required
• Rotating holidays required

Compensation

• Hourly pay range: $19.71 to $28.58 per hour
• Pay rate determined by expertise and years of experience

Required Qualifications

• CNA certification, or successful completion of an accredited nursing assistant training course, or minimum six months of previous patient care experience, or equivalent, or completion of one nursing clinical rotation
• American Heart Association CPR certification
• High school diploma or equivalent
• Ability to interact effectively with others
