Patient Care Technician - Cardiac Acute Care * Days - 16hrs/wk

Under the direction of a Registered Nurse, you will provide basic nursing care to patients in a cardiac acute care setting and perform related tasks to support the unit. This is a part-time position working 16 hours per week on day shifts, including weekends.

Responsibilities

• Assist patients with activities of daily living including bathing, grooming, and personal hygiene
• Make occupied and unoccupied beds; turn, position, and transfer patients
• Ambulate and dangle patients; perform passive and assist with active range-of-motion exercises
• Provide indwelling urinary catheter care (excluding insertion, removal, and irrigation)
• Change non-sterile dressings and provide ileostomy/colostomy care
• Assist with postmortem care as needed
• Pass meal trays, snacks, and water; feed patients; measure and record dietary intake
• Assist patients with elimination needs and record accurate input and output; empty designated drains
• Collect and label sputum, urine, and stool specimens for laboratory testing
• Test urine for sugar, acetone, blood, or pH; strain urine for kidney stones
• Use glucometer to test blood glucose levels
• Measure and record vital signs including oral and tympanic temperature, radial and apical pulse, blood pressure, and respiratory rate
• Measure patient weight using standing, chair, sling, and bed scales
• Assist patients with incentive spirometry; set up oxygen flow meters and suction equipment
• Apply and remove ice bags, moist or dry heat, ace bandages, arm slings, binders, supports, anti-embolism stockings, sequential compression devices, and restraints
• Use aseptic technique and adhere to universal/standard precautions
• Care for patients with special isolation precautions
• Pass clean linen and bag and dispose of soiled linen
• Replace full sharps containers and clean equipment between patient use
• Document care as directed by the RN
• Communicate effectively using unit communication systems; answer patient call lights
• Report observations to the RN and maintain patient confidentiality
• Perform other duties as assigned to facilitate department efficiency

Required Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED
• One of the following:
• Current Certified Nurse Aide (CENA) certification, OR
• Current enrollment and continued progression in a health science program with completion of nursing fundamentals course and/or one clinical rotation (including but not limited to Nursing School, Pre-PA School, Medical School, or closely related health science program), OR
• Equivalent experience such as Medical Assistant, Paramedic, Medical First Responder, EMT, Nurse Tech, Resident Aid/Assistant, or LPN
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) provider certification

Preferred Qualifications

• Basic understanding of Medical Terminology, Anatomy, Physiology, and Patient Confidentiality
• Experience in acute care or extended care facility
• Ability to successfully complete unit-specific core competencies as defined in the orientation checklist
